House paid off 12 years ago. Yet every year we pay over $3,000 PT. It just don’t seem fair. No actually never own the house. Stop paying PT and see how fast they take it away from you. Make it that you pay PT until house paid off.

It definitely needs to end on retired people over 65. By the time you are are 65 you have paid your dues and been taxed to death. I always vote no on millage renewals except for schools.

Not sure why you would think that the house being paid off has anything to do with property taxes. The difference is rather than escrow through mortgage payment vs your paying directly kind of bites. But, you have no less fire protection, police, schools, city government, roads, etc., etc., after your house is paid off.

So renters don’t pay as much. But the landlord pays their share.

Someone pays plus landlords with multiple houses pay more because they can have homestead exemption on only one property.

I think we'll have to settle for 'owner occupied' homes only and they'll raise taxes on landlords to compensate

Built in 1998 & paid off in 2011. Now have 6700.00 per year in Property Tax. Between taxes and what insurance cost that would be about 1800.00 per month so yes you are never away from cost with owning

Don’t seem fair. We pay for schools too. Haven’t had a child in school in 17 years.

I explained property tax to one of my kids a while back. It went like this:

Me: Explains property taxes.

Kid: So yall saved up a bunch of money to buy this land, but if you don’t pay the government even more money every year, the sheriff will come take it and sell it to someone else?

Me: Yes.

Kid: Then you don’t own it.

Not gonna lie, the force is strong with that one.

Trump can’t eliminate property taxes, that’s a state-level issue, not federal. Personally, I’d be all for a fair tax system, but it doesn’t seem like something he’s seriously interested in, and pushing it through would take a ton of political capital.

Honestly, I wish states were only allowed to tax in one way, just to make everyone’s tax burden more transparent. I actually prefer sales tax because I you can’t exempt by demographics and it’s very transparent. That said, I get why it’s not ideal in rural areas where local businesses are limited. Property taxes are predictable and make budgeting easier, but I don’t like the fact that the government can ultimately take your property if you fall behind.

And income taxes? They punish people for working and saving, so yeah, not a fan. Maybe the best approach would be a statewide sales tax that’s collected statewide and then distributed to local governments based on population.

Being I am retired I would love this. Also over half of my property taxes are school taxes. We never had kids and we should not pay school taxes!!!

The only people funding the services that rely on property taxes are property owners. That burden should be spread out to everyone via a flat sales tax.

People shouldnt be punished for working hard and owning something.

Serious enough for you?

I see this headed for a flat consumption tax across the country.
This the way, but the political will to press this is lacking.
