Is he supposed to cut ties with any country that is responsible for the murder of one of it's own citizens?

Liberals are now isolationists?

This is EXACTLY why I do not trust the tape or the CIA's "assessment"... fricking political stunt at best...

So you want him to fully confirm what our Intelligence community is gathering knowing that we really cant do anything about it.. How about we let the Intelligence community do what they do, use information to gain more information or would prefer if they assassinate the prince

Which is why this makes me think this is a power play by MBS. Trump has thrown his lot in with SA to counter Iran and SA can also nudge closer to Russia if the US does anything it doesn’t like.

I first thought it was wild and reckless by MBS, but now I think it’s dual-edged brilliant. Send a shot across the bow of the US and put a kibosh on domestic dissent.

wmr put it well the other day - this Muh Kasoggi foolishness is the epitome of NPC.

Liberals like TBoy and the OP are mad about a foreign journalist being killed by his own government in the embassy of another government that has jailed hundreds of thousands of journalists and soldiers and killed thousands more

I don't know that there is a "good" move here.

Salman (and thus Saudi) are the bulwark against Iran (and thus Russia) running rampant through the region. Salman is also pushing more westernized societal reforms and has formally recognized Israel's right to exist.

Trump could demand Salman step down or cut off US military and commerical support to the country over the Khashoggi incident, while that might feel good for the short term it could well end up being a long-term loss.

There isn't a good move. There are just least bad moves. Same as it has always been for us in the Middle East.

There is mollifying Erdogan. There is protecting MBS. There is de-fanging an ally willing to counter-act the Iranian tear through the region. There is disruption in energy supply. There is tacitly agreeing to a closer Turkish-Iranian relationship. Etc. Etc. Lots of shitty options.

It's not even completely about the reaction. It's now more about his refusal to accept the CIA's assessment.

Oh

You don’t think Trump knows what’s in it? Trump doesn’t care we got billions on the line plus the Saudis just flooded the market with oil which if continues could kill our economy. There are so many things you people don’t even think about including containing Iran. This is a bad part of the world and maybe the Saudis will give the press more freedom and human rights but it needs to be done without embarrassing the regime? They have already lost face internationally.

Recap:
Arms Deal
Containing Iran
Friend of Israel
Coalition of Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi
Oil Supply
American Jobs
etc...

All this could be turned on it’s head while the Saudis fall into China’s hands. They been put on notice but let’s remember this is one journalist who isn’t worth the economic backlash that would result because of international pressure on us.

Top White House Official Involved in Saudi Sanctions Resigns

quote:

WASHINGTON — A top White House official responsible for American policy toward Saudi Arabia resigned on Friday evening, a move that may suggest fractures inside the Trump administration over the response to the brutal killing of the dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

The official, Kirsten Fontenrose, had pushed for tough measures against the Saudi government, and had been in Riyadh to discuss a raft of sanctions that the American government imposed in recent days against those identified as responsible for the killing, according to two people familiar with the conversations. Specifically, she advocated that Saud al-Qahtani, a top adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, be added to the list, and he ultimately was.

I dont think Trump has figured out that the Saudis were involved in 9/11

Square your support for the US giving Gulen political asylum away from Erdogan so he isnt killed with Khashoggi living here as a dissident, traveling to the Saudi consulate for papers, and then being brutally and brazenly murdered on the orders of Saudi leadership.

I don’t see how you can square the two. Either we harbor dissidents and give a shite about free speech or we don’t. Same thing with Russian journalists poisoned in foreign capitals.

We can’t give Gulen to Erdogan, I’ve stated this but we can’t turn our backs on our economic and geopolitical interest over the killing of a journalist.
