Truckers quitting due to fuel prices?

Anyone else heard this?
A guy that used to work for me went into trucking 4 or 5 years ago called me last week ready to come back to contracting. He owns his own truck and said it is no longer profitable due to fuel and insurance prices. He seems to think the problems we already are seeing from trucking are about to compound as he knows many smaller guys parking their trucks until things level off.
I know some here are in transportation and curious if you are hearing the same.

I was looking at running a box truck or three and can’t quite make the numbers work because of the gas prices.
You’d have to have a larger fleet to make it worth it and I don’t want 30 employees.

Raising prices may not be an option. Yet.
As supply goes down while demand stays high, raising prices may be feasible.

I wish they would all go on strike and shut down the whole country. Goes to show we depend on other countries way to much.

You would think so but a lot of those contracts are sent out for bid apparently and larger operations are bidding low to squeeze out smaller guys and due to reduced volume from the ports taking forever to offload cargo.
All of that going on but at least Pete took two months off to be with his baby.

Was literally looking at the same thing.

That's what he is saying too. Reduced volume means the larger guys that are normally busy no matter what are now bidding on everything so the smaller guys are being squeezed out. The larger guys also get better deals on fuel since they buy in large bulk.

I can't see how it isn't true in some regards... I mean shite, I'm paying $25 more a week in gas and I just commute to and from work for the most part.
I'd imagine those truckers are paying a few hundred more a week without any additional pay. Doesn't make sense to do it. Sit on your arse, collect UE, and ride it out.

I don't believe it. Most trucking companies will add a fuel surcharge to offset the higher fuel prices. It doesn't make sense.

Read the thread. You have two guys that do it literally backing up what is in my OP.

I may end up taking a sabbatical and run campers from Indiana to delivery location.
My wife has one more year of grad school and my kids are grown.
I think it would be fun for 6-12 months.

I don't want to hear shite from these Truckers about Fuel prices
Trucks are charging $3-4 dollars per mile on all routes. That's double what it was 18 months ago. How TF is he not making money right now?
Fuel Prices were higher a few years ago and we were only paying $2-3 Per mile

If Tesla can get its trucking fleet operations going, that will be a boon to the industry. Drivers will still be needed because no insurer will cover a self-driving fleet, lowering fuel costs and probably allowing for longer hauls.

Have insurance prices gone up, like everything else?
I find it hard to believe that truckers can't make it now, when many were making 6 figures recently.
I don't think diesel fuel prices have skyrocketed in price, like 87 octane fuel has.
Maybe I'm wrong about that. I just recall seeing diesel fuel still being expensive last year ( compared to regular fuel)

But it has. I put $85 in the F250 Friday and that was only because the station has an $85 limit. I could have reset the pump and it probably would have taken another $10 to top off the entire way. I was filling it up for around $60 under Trump.

Every owner op I know gets a fuel surcharge from most customers.
