What in the add was fake?

Nothing. I just watched it. It used the exact words Reagan uttered in his most noted speech on tariffs. The Reagan library is just closing ranks to protect The Party and say it is misrepresenting Reagan. Unless misrepresentation means "took his exact words to make modern GOP policies sound retarded."

quote:

The ad is considered “fake” or misleading primarily because it selectively edits and rearranges excerpts from Reagan’s original April 25, 1987, Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade, omitting key context that shows his support for targeted tariffs in cases of unfair trade practices. In the full speech,

Reagan expresses a general aversion to tariffs, linking them to historical harms like exacerbating the Great Depression via the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. However, he frames his remarks around a recent decision to impose tariffs on certain Japanese goods (like semiconductors) as a “special case” due to Japanese companies violating US-Japan trade agreements and engaging in unfair practices, such as dumping cheap products to harm American industries. He states he was “loath” to impose barriers but did so reluctantly for fairness, vowing to remove them once Japan complied.

The ad skips these parts, jumps between sections (sometimes reversing order or omitting intervening minutes of audio), and creates a narrative of blanket opposition to all tariffs, which misrepresents the speech’s balanced view on free trade with exceptions for retaliation against violations.

Okay, but I’ve watched the speech at least one time in the last few years and would disagree that Reagan’s opinion was changed by whatever editing they did to extract key points.

Politicians make political decisions that are generally based upon mob mentality. In essence, which decision will inflame their mob. Rarely are they based in logic or reason. Business people make business decisions based upon financial leverage, risk, and ROI. Canada has zero leverage here and it’s good business for them to maintain the relationship in light of the benefit they receive by simply being our neighbor.

Imagine living next door to an extremely wealthy guy with an off shore boat. For years the guy takes you fishing and doesn’t ask you to pay a thing. One day he asks that you pay for half of the fuel cost. Your righteous indignation kicks in not bc you can’t afford to pay for the fuel but simply bc he is rich and you feel he should pay all of it. Now imagine doing so, but the fish you caught made up at least half of your family’s protein. Canadian politicians would rather let their people starve than pay the fair share they can afford bc the US is rich and should just pay it all.

I mean, the brass tacks of the negotiating power dynamics are not something I'm arguing about. I just feel like the ad is not a misrepresentation of Reagan's opinion on the topic. The problem here is that the modern GOP seemingly cannot handle the concept that the party had different ideas and platform planks in the past than they do today. So, yeah, a key figure in the party's history has opinions that are counter to the party's position today. People change and so do parties. There is no need to try to doublethink people.

Don't know, need to see it, but the ad campaign, not just one ad, cost 75 million.

Was the ad misleading? Did it misrepresent Reagan's views or comments? Was AI used?

I battle ALOT with the liberal Canadians on YouTube, specifically:

• Guard The Leaf
• The PlanetD
• Claus Kellerman POV

So much so, they have blocked me and my subsequent alternate logins I have used. They only like their free speech and fall victim to their own Govt run MSM which only gaslights them further.

Wanna have some fun, search those ding dong channels above. Join the fight for the truth :).

If anyone knows how to get more google logins (only so many per phone), let me know so I can rejoin the fight!

I can’t think of any other time where I’ve watched politicians explicitly skip over their own constituents and try to directly appeal to the senses of foreign nationals.

It’s truly bizarre watching Canadians attempt to help Americans make better decisions.

I encourage everyone to go to www.Trade.gov and learn how Canada fricks the greatest neighbor in the World.

I've worked with Canadians for a couple of decades. They are by far the most passive-aggressive, defensive, and self righteous humans on planet.

They have no fricking clue how tough trade and life is for other countries. They are the luckiest MOfos in the World to have the US as neighbors. ...and all they do is bitch.

Anyone with brains is “against” tariffs all things being equal, and that includes Trump. Tariffs are useful when there is price distortion going on from another nation and when the product in question is of strategic importance. Everyone with a brain understands that, too, including Ronald Reagan.

China subsidizes certain strategic industries in order to gain monopolies. It is true that these subsidies are financial gifts to the American people, however China intends to use those monopolies to dominate America in ways that will cause the flow of benefits to reverse. This is predatory pricing. We don’t allow companies to do it, and we should not allow countries to do it.

Many other countries have unfair trade policies with the US, including tariffs, regulations designed to exclude our products, subsidies, etc. We should use tariffs, or some other method, to fight against this.

I would anticipate an immediate cease and desist order. The commercial is currently still airing. I just now saw it on Newsmax. Ironic that it came on right after they did a segment showing Reagans original 5 minute radio address and highlighted how it was selectively edited to change the context.

Canada’s excursion into American politics began with a choice that looks technical but is deeply political. Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government funded a US-advertising campaign that excerpted Ronald Reagan in a way that softened his insistence on fair play and sharpened only his paeans to free trade. The cut, circulated to American viewers, left out the condition that anchored Reagan’s view, namely that free trade requires reciprocity and enforceable rules. When a foreign government edits a former US president to shape the American debate during live negotiations, the line between trade advocacy and political participation is crossed.

When I saw the ad my first thought was that Demicrats raised hell over some political facebook posts paid by Russia in 2016.

Is it legal for foreign governments to engage in political activity in the US?

Yep, I got around to seeing the full context. Shocker, Canada is lying to its citizens. Again.
