If you think about it, the tobacco lobby truly is amazing.

You have cities that have passed ordinances banning the sizes of cups for soda and outlawing plastic straws, yet tobacco remains perfectly legal to buy.

Tobacco products have absolutely ZERO benefit to the human body and it has proven to cause great expense to the nation’s population and its healthcare system.

Yet, you have not outcry to ban the product in its entirety.

Tobacco lobby doing work.

***oh and i know the govt gets to tax the crap out of it. But that makes my point as well. Completely terrible product that provides no nutritional value to its citizens, but govt will sell its soul for some tax revenue.

They don't need a lobby. Tobacco performs two great services for govt.
1. The taxes are enormous.
2. The reduction in life expectancy saves Soc. Security.

Sheriff's/LEO lobby. Among other things, they've successfully legalized theft in the form of Civil Asset Forfeiture. They've helped keep marijuana and other drugs with legitimate medical uses illegal (not to mention schedule 1) for decades, and kept their prisons stocked with non-violent offenders as a result.

The big tobacco companies have paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in court settlements, cities are constantly restricting where you can smoke, vaping and legal weed are taking over with the kids. I'm guessing the tobacco companies have at least partial ownership of the vaping and weed companies though.

The alcohol lobby on the other hand doesn't have most of these problems plus they can still advertise on tv.

You just jogged a very old brain cell. When I was 7 years old my dad would take me to the Texaco office so he could get equipment for his next job in the marsh.
He would give me a quarter (yes, 25 cents) and say 'Go to the machine in the lobby and get me a pack of Kent'.

Those were the days.

Huh? All states restrict it to those 18 or over with some setting the limit at 21.

While you overstate your case, you do have something of a point. However more of that has to do with powerful tobacco state elected officials than the lobby per se.

I like the LEO/Sheriff's answer. No one wants to be on the other side of whatever issue they are pushing.

Tobacco users die younger, but incur much higher health costs in their final years. That more than offsets any savings.

The Israel lobby would get my vote. They’re very effective.

I remember in 2000, a jury in Florida granted plaintiffs $145 Billion in the racially-charged "Engle" case. Altria Group, among other defendants, saw a big dip in stock price.

I asked an old timer I knew what he thought. He was pretty wealthy, and a very successful investor. He told me "Buy. Altria might be the best managed company in the world, and they damn sure have the best lawyers. No way that award will stick." I bought MO stock pretty big.

Appeals lasted 3 years. During those years, Altria spun off Kraft Heinz, Phillip Morris International, and other holdings that became Mondelez International. Each of those holdings climbed in value from 1700% to 2100%, and Altria itself climbed 2600%.

After 3 years, the monster verdict was thrown out on appeal. One of the luckiest investments of my life.

Don't bet against tobacco companies.
