This so called “government shutdown” should make one thing very clear.

It should make it very clear why the federal government needs to shrink by at least 50% immediately.
The Federal government and the Swamp Skunks are showing all Americans there’s been way too much power consolidation into federal government. If the states were handling their own business we wouldn’t be dealing with the threats of the federal government shutting down. The Federal government needs to be neutered, bureaucracies need to be slashed, states need to demand their power/tax dollars remain at the state level excluding the monies required for defense and and critical infrastructure projects.
Wake the frick up America!!!

The federal gov should be responsible for national defense, parks, and interstate commerce disputes.

I really wish people understood what the government does and how it works before making these terribly inaccurate threads.
A shutdown proves nothing.

We the people don’t need a federal behemoth. There’s not one person who audits private sector companies/organizations that wouldn’t be appalled at the inefficient manner that nearly all government bureaucracies are currently operating.

Again, if your job description and/or government department isn't explicitly listed in the Constitution, then you're a casualty of the Tenth Amendment and should look to your state for employment.

I don’t disagree with any of that. But it’s completely unrelated to the shutdown.
Nonessential functions are still necessary, regardless of their efficiency.
Essential functions, such as food safety inspection are necessary. And before you say “the private sector can do better”, understand that the government is still accountable for that function and would write a terrible contract full of political favors and kickbacks that would be terribly managed that would have cost overruns and under perform.
If there’s one thing that the government sucks at, its contracting. Probably worse than just having them do it inefficiently.
So pick your poison.
The key to cutting government bloat is identifying the program that are not necessary and haveing them eliminated. That cuts both the “essential” functions, as well as non essential support functions of that program.
That’s up to congress.

Looks like he is saying that we are getting a real time look at just how unnecessary much of what the government does really is
Or, if some of these things are necessary, then give the responsibility back to the states as the Constitution says we should

Threads like this make me wish we would actually shut the whole thing down, without any of this essential/nonessential crap. The reason the inconvenience on the public has been so limited is almost half a million people are just showing up to work for free right now.
Shut down all those departments for real and we'll see how much or how little we all utilize government services.

I'll take that bet.

We'd have anarchy. No electricity, flights grounded, no treasury means no dollars in circulation, we'd default on our debts the stock market would collapse, the police would walk off the job, there'd be no military, no cia, no FBI. Stupid to say we could function without a government
Society would collapse quickly if we really had a shutdown and no government, not just the poor frickers having to work without pay.

Exactly, I'm one of the "non-essential" furloughed employees that has been sitting at home for 3 weeks.
But 2 weeks ago when South Louisiana got 3 inches of rain and everyone started looking at the river gages and wanted to know why "X" gage wasn't fixed, why is "Y" gage reading wrong, or is my house gonna flood, my non-essential arse got really popular with parish and local officials emails.
Funny how that works, I'm a spoiled unneeded government worker until you're shits about to flood.

Because it's been 200 years of bureaucracy that has taken away from self reliance. You obviously couldn't go back right away.

Like when the federal reserve helped cause the great depression?

we'd default on our debts
Hmm I wonder why we are in so much debt

I think this falls under national defense. However, we could do with a much more limited group of bureaucrats spying on the american people. Let's not mention how corrupt the NSA, CIA, FBI have been for their entire existences.

So you do want no government and all that follows? You're an anarchist?

No. I like the central government that was intended under the constitution. Do you want an extreme overreaching government and the nanny state that follows? Are you a communist?

We don't have to be subjected to federal government addiction. We have states. If a state can't survive on its own without the feds, it doesn't deserve to be a state.
There are enumerated powers of the Federal Government. Those costs/activities outside what is specifically listed in the Constitution
are supposed to be gone anyway. The Federal Government is not a god.

the police would walk off the job, there'd be no military,
I know plenty that would do their jobs, especially in that situation. The guys that are there as a 9-5, yeah... the guys that were serious about the oath they took? You're mistaken. They joined for a reason, and it wasn't money.

no cia, no FBI
Same, and they need to trim the fat too. They both need to be cleaned out.

Stupid to say we could function without a government
Spoken like a true junkie.

Suck it up federal employees. No one, no one gave a filthy crap about all the private sector employees that were unemployed & received no paychecks during the 8 years of obamas disaster. At least you people will get all of your money back. I don't feel one bit of sorry for you & your pensions & retirements on our backs. We just have to sit here & give you everything you want. How about you people contribute back to us.
