Pretty good video on Skid Row and the Homelessness in America

I think the most frightening thing about this video is when the guy was saying people would wake up around 8 and wonder to themselves who would be bringing them food... that's not a normal human feeling, and keeps them homeless, it's sad.

I share your befuddlement. It’s not a crisis if the main focus is white men. Who cares about them?

I read a lot of studies on the homeless back in the 80s. There was the usual stuff about why they choose to be homeless... drugs, alcohol, mental illness. But the weirdest one (about 10% of those interviewed) described the problem as 'total lack of self motivation.'
IE, "If someone held a gun to my head and said 'clean yourself up and get a job' I would do it and I would be much better off. But I cannot make myself do it without coercion."

Someone wiser than me said that the poor will always be with us.

We can alleviate poverty, and we should always help those in need, but we will never eradicate poverty.

As to homelessness specifically, some people prefer to live a life without responsibilities. And to the OPs point, we do enable that.

I feel like it's even worse in places like LA (it's kinda mentioned in passing in the video) where the housing is just way too damn high because of non-American entities coming in and jacking up the prices of homes. I could never in good conscience move to anywhere close to the LA area with an 8 month old, there is no guarantee I could even survive the cost of living in that area, it's outrageous.

He said everything that needed to be said when he said

Paraphrased: the mindset - when you're hungry you go get it, rustle up some grub somewhere, The mindset of dependency is wrong.

given that Jesus said that the poor will always be with us, that’s why I believe we will ALWAYS have homelessness and poverty.

A lot of homeless people have mental issues that would require thousands in treatment...and even that might not change anything.

It just seems to be getting worse. I think any solution that would work would be hella expensive.

my mom has worked with the homeless in her spare time for most of my adult life. She will be the first one to tell you that you can't fix homeless people. Mental illness is the biggest problem and then the total lack of motivation is the second. A few years back a homeless man was killed by a hit and run on college blvd. His name was Troy. Troy lived with my mom and her husband for 2yrs and worked with them as they built their home. He was sober while living with my mom and even went to church with her on Sunday. After 2 years he decided that he wanted to go back to streets because he missed the life as he said. He died within the first month he left my moms. This broke my mom she is still and advocate for the homeless but she has stopped trying to fix them as i say.

There will always be a % of humans who are not fixable. There is no solution to this.

It's not fixable.

We have shelter and housing for them locally but we still have homeless because of behavioral issues.

Drug and alcohol abuse is the primary issue with other mental health issues right behind.

You can fix the economic outcasts, you can't fix those that refuse help.

But, why has this issue seemingly exploded over the past 10 or so years?

The only way to end it is to cut aid to them off completely. They either starve or they pull themselves together and figure it out
