I can promise you, the Russians do not ever laugh at a U S Naval Aircraft Carrier!!

My gut feel is Russia can handle a single US CSG. It may not be pretty but they are entrenched there and we are not.

IF that were to happen, would the American public hold this administration just as responsible, or more so, than Russia for putting our people out there on a limb? With my granddaughter being out there, I know how I would feel.

Here is someone that has zero understanding of the strength of a carrier battle group.

Look, the Russians probably have air superiority over the Black Sea. Any fighter bomber of ours will have to contest that airspace. I don't care how strong we think we are it looks as though Russia is not concerned about it. We have a carrier in the Mediterranean which is several countries in distance from the "action". Get the CSG into the Black Sea and we are in for a real shooting war. We won't do it. And we have few assets in the area otherwise. If Russia attacks Ukraine they will take Ukraine. I'm not a military guy but I can see our deficiencies pretty well. We are not set up to fight or deter there. We do have a couple of air bases in Bulgaria. I'm sure we will start to see Russia overturning the elected officials in these countries in the coming years.
I'm not saying we don't have power in a CSG. But we are pretty impotent as we have no will to fight that battle.

Do you remember Mitt Romney's comment during his debate and BH Obama's comment about "last century"?

The Russians are using this buildup for leverage only. Talks are already underway. There will be no Russian invasion unless the invitation is given by the money lenders.

That has been a heavy weight on my mind. Any CSG or surface ship would be a sitting duck in there as the situation currently exists. The Black Sea is Russia's Gulf of Mexico and getting in and out of the Black Sea entails that very narrow straight controlled by Turkey. I will need to research and read Romney's and Obama's comments about the "last century". I honestly do not remember them at the moment.

Russia must perceive an existential threat in Ukraine or with Ukraine as the first step. I just don't think they want democracies on their direct border.
Russia or Putin?

I can understand a nation wanting a buffer zone from perceived opponents, but I've seen people argue that this action is all Putin trying to protect himself and his own wealth and power.

I've also seen arguments that if that's true, it's so wrong-headed that it must be an example of the most desperate flailing of a doomed man, since there are still more sanctions that can be effectively imposed on the oligarchs who are keeping him in power and wealth.

Is there a nationalistic argument that a re-formed USSR is 'better' than a collection of somewhat aligned independent countries? (I really don't know - that wasn't a rhetorical question for me).

Turkey has a 15,000t restriction on the strait in the Montreux Convention to enter the Black Sea. They only allowed Russia's "aircraft-carrying cruisers" in its Kiev-class and Kuznetsov-class ships to placate them. Turkey will never allow a NATO aircraft carrier into the black sea and it would be an all-around bad idea to put one into the black sea anyway.

I'll do a weak paraphrase but Romney said that Russia continued to be a strategic threat to the US and the free world. Obama said the comment was essentially silly in that Romney was fighting ghosts and perceptions from the last century. In essence Obama said Russia was no big deal. Remember they are a second world country with a 1st world military.

So are the Russian people willing to sacrifice their young men for a nearly septuagenarian leader and a corrupt one at that?

Harvey Milk has a boat, so... yeah. Exactly the sort of thing that the Imperial Deep State would do to legitimize this bastard.

Yeah, probably much easier to blockade the Dardanelles and dare the Russians to come out.

John Bolton's wife is probably right now beating on the bathroom door asking him why it takes him an hour to go to the bathroom.
