You don’t really believe this, do you? Plenty of intellectually disabled people know damn well when they’re being mocked, same as you would. Speech police? Heck no. But we can and should try to be better people.

I have a mentally-challenged, plus autistic sibling (medically diagnosed “profoundly mentally retarded” in the late 1970s) and have never stopped using the word since adolescence, where it rightfully applies. I am allowing you all to use it as you see fit, since I personally have earned the right to say it. As long as you don’t say it around my parents, it’s ok. That’s what I have learned in this life. Go in peace.

We can’t call retards retards. Which means retard can no longer be used as a word for those who are retarded.
