7) The neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, which is part of the Ukrainian National Guard, is fighting there & has a headquarters in the city. Expect the Russians to give the Azov Battalion no quarter. This may prolong the fight & lead to greater civilian suffering.
Not all of the Azov force is located in Mariupol but what is there is living on borrowed time.

1) Interesting information on the control of the skies above Ukraine: @nytimes: "While experts have been puzzled by Russia’s failure to gain complete control over the Ukrainian skies, they are certainly dominant ..."
quote:
2) "... --- Russian surface-to-air missile capabilities can reach anywhere in Ukraine, according to military analysts. Russia is believed to fly some 200 sorties per day while Ukraine flies five to 10."
quote:
3) In the first week of the war, it is not clear how many Russian strikes hit their targets, but Piotr Lukasiewicz, an analyst at Polityka Insight, a Warsaw-based research institute, said that they did serious damage to Ukraine’s command and control centers."
quote:
4) “They disabled an important headquarters and communications center in the beginning with precision strikes,” he said.
quote:
5) "Just as the Russians are plagued by logistical and resupply issues, the Ukrainians are struggling to replace the stationary systems that the Russians have destroyed or disabled."
quote:
6) “Gradually Ukrainians are losing their radars or warning systems,” Mr. Lukasiewicz said.
quote:
7) We have to consider the possibility that the Russians have been holding back the bulk of its air force until Ukrainian air defenses have been sufficiently degraded. Russia appears to be relying on long range missiles to hit key air defense facilities.
quote:
8) Disabling a sophisticated air defense network doesn't happen overnight. It can take weeks to accomplish. If true, this is evidence that the Russians were prepared for a lengthy campaign.
quote:
9) The sortie ratio of 200 to 5/10 a day in favor of Russia shows that the Russians have a distinct advantage in the air. And this part of the reason Zelensky is pleading for a no-fly zone.
quote:
10) One last note: @nytimes said the Russians are "dominant" in the air but then says they don't have Air Superiority. This might be splitting hairs, but that is somewhat contradictory. NATO defines Air Superiority as follows:
quote:
11) "That degree of dominance in the air battle of one force over another which permits the conduct of operations by the former and its related land, sea and air forces at a given time and place without prohibitive interference by the opposing force."
quote:
12) To be clear, I am not saying the Russians have Air Superiority (it sounds like they are on the cusp), but @nytimes is using terminology that implies it does.

So has anyone mentioned that Zelensky just banned all opposition parties in Ukraine through the National Security and Defense Council or
quote:
Zelensky in latest address: "The activities of politicians to divide or collude will not succeed, but will receive a harsh response."
quote:
"Therefore the NSDC decided, taking into account the full-scale war unleashed by the Russian Federation and the political ties that a number of political structures have with this state, to suspend any activities of a number of political parties during martial law."
quote:
Parties to be banned imminently: "Opposition Platform - For Life", "Shariy Party", "Nashi", "Opposition Bloc", "Left Opposition", "Union of Left Forces", "State", "Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine", "Socialist Party of Ukraine", "Socialists", "Volodymyr Saldo Bloc".

And that's just on top of having the Security Service arbitrarily arrest a whole bunch of journalists and bloggers, such as Yuri Tkachev earlier today in Odessa. Based & democracy-pilled

You know the Democratic party is looking on with envy. If they could only figure out a way to enact martial law and cancel the 2022 elections.

Missile attack on Ukrainian military base for foreign fighters was launched after Russian forces hacked into British phones
UK mobile numbers were said to have 'lit up' the Ukrainian phone network.

It's so weird to read this thread, then the OT thread. Here, Russia's winning handily, about to take more cities. There, Russia has been stalemated with little hope of resuming the offensive, and its supply lines have been cut.
And, as a person just sitting in the U.S. looking at the internet, I have almost no way of telling which story si real.
I can't speak for anyone else but I have tried sifting through the info to get at least a general sense about what is going on. The NYT reporting "steady" Russian advances today seems to go along with the other reports that I have seen. Appears as Mariupol will be the next city taken.

Ukraine has been refurbishing a lot of old Soviet SAM systems for years now. Many of which are mobile, not fixed installations. That is evidently keeping the Russian planes flying low and fast, but there are lots of Stingers too.

Ukraine cannot win this war.

Curious what the down votes are for? Do you not believe it is him? Down voting him. Down voting because the picture isn't more crisp?

I’m not sure Russia can either.
If the first 3 weeks of this conflict has taught us anything, it’s that war between capable opponents (or near capable) is not worth it.

This is a good example of Ukrainian propaganda on TikTok.
They "capture" or destroy Russian equipment, then as they try to move it they get shelled into Bolivion. In this video they got an armored vehicle, drive it into the river, bog down in there, then two farmers come to help and they all get shelled. Then armor is re-captured by Russians.

The Russians say they’re outside of Krivyi Rih, which is north of Kherson, and north east of Nykolaiv.
If they’re heading that direction, the Russians are probably trying to cut the M-30 west of Dnipro.
