Every listened to At Seventeen by Janice Ian? It is basically a rant about how the girls who have it all together when they are young end up as stepford wives while girls who weren’t with the “in” crowd don’t end up trapped like that.
Ian was also a lesbian who was closeted at that time IIRC. I’m thinking the song was a lot of projection about what she wanted and didn’t get.

Newsflash, it isn’t just little lesbian girls who wistfully look at the popular beauty queens who feel left out. Every kid who has ever gone through puberty has had to some degree or level of isolation. And while it is undeniably worse for some, I think there are others who just romantically cling to this pain and never let go.
