put more resources in prevention
That engine is running close to the red-line. Moderna developed a vaccine prototype in 42 days. That is lightspeed fast. But staged trials, efficacy assessment, etc will still take months.

Sans vaccine, step 1 will be wide distribution of a COVID-19 diagnostic test to formally identify infections. That will enable appropriate quarantining. Again, CDC and the FDA are pushing at unprecedented levels to get the diagnostic kits out. Unfortunately, there was a flaw in the reagent design. The kit design needs a little more work to function properly.

Meanwhile, remdesivir is being produced and used in trials as a treatment adjunct. The verdict is still out on efficacy, but early on it seems there may be some treatment benefit.

So there is a lot going on.

I'm doing some painting this weekend and ran by Lowe's to pick up some supplies. I noticed the dust masks were sold out. I asked the paint guy about it and he said people are coming in and buying them boxes at a time.

If you're between the age of 1-40 you have what, a .2% chance of dying from this? Who gives a shite.

Doesn’t flu kill somewhere around 15K in the US every year?

You think Corona is going to kill 15K in the US this year?

This is basically another flu virus. It is not in Louisiana at the moment. The concern should be that once it has become established world wide which appear inevitable at this point, (Italy, Brazil, Iran, China etc.) does it have a higher death rate than your standard flu! Currently it does have a higher death rate.

That is the concern that people should have.

The only reason why we aren’t concerned is there aren’t that many cases here yet. Check back in two months.

Everything is sold out here as well. If you don’t already have your masks...too late.

Painter's mask are ineffective for the Caronavirus anyway. Apparently you need the N95 FFR type mask. I don't think you can get that at Lowe's.

If you're healthy you're probably fine. Most of the deaths are in the 60+ range, which has something like a 15% mortality rate.

Old people are more likely to get the flu and die from that than corona.

I’m told the stress this virus puts on the respiratory system is equivalent to that of a chest X-ray

What? That does not make any sense. A chest X-Ray puts zero stress on the respiratory system.

Right.
What most folks don't understand is a standard mask offers wearers virtually no protection. It protects everybody else from them

FWIW... was in Vietnam from 2-7 thru 2-18 for a relatives wedding and a vacation. Visited Ho Chi Minh city, Phan Thiet, Dalat, Mui ne and a lotta rural areas. EVERYONE was using masks and in Siagon all the public schools and universities were closed but no kinda real panic, just real concern for the public health. Folk going about their business.

Flew back thru Seoul with a 4hr layover on our way back to Atl. Same thing there, masks errywhere but business as usual...

My worry is if it hits the homeless addicts on the West Coast, with their lowered immunity it could skew the shite out of the mortality rate should a Typhoid Mary show up among the opioid-addicted homeless in LA county.

Not surprising you’ve got people on here suggesting folks go buy thousands of cans of food in case we are locked in our homes for months

TL;DR - what I am saying is that it's simply way too early to tell if it will or won't and that it's better to be concerned enough to be wary of it than to just Katrina it (ie: the mindset of how hurricanes never hit New Orleans... until one did).

Agree on that.

Thanks.

While we were waiting in one of the curtained off holding rooms I took the opportunity to ask a doctor then later a nurse if they were worried about corona. Each time they smiled, chuckled, and said no.
