The flu has a far more extensive reach, has multiple strains (which is where death rates come from) and continues to evolve just fast enough to keep from being eradicated.

So the flu is worse?

Does anyone remember Y2K? A lot of people wouldn't fly because they were convinced the plane's computers would lock up and the plane would crash.

Coronavirus is coming to the US. People you know, if not yourself, are going to get it. Based on current data, 1 out of 50 people who get it die. As a poker player who’s been on the losing end of too many to count “1 in 50” chances, I don’t like those odds.

That is an insanely wrong statistic. You really need to recheck that

Demographics and age need to be taken into consideration. You can’t jus say “1 out of 50” when mostly 89 year olds (sorry Zach) are dying.

How many infants have died

What is the fatality rate then? I’ve seen that number in multiple sources.

Yea ER personnel were asking everyone if they had a flu vaccine and if he or she said no they were given a mask.

that's dumb bc half the flu illnesses are from strains not in the shot

That's like comparing apples to helicopters because the flu has been around so long that we do not have similar data on its initial spread.

Go back to the LSU quarterback comparison.

They’re probably trying to cut down on chances of transmission for the other half.

Right.

But you are saying Corona is worse.

How can you say that?

A '1 in x' explanation is poor at this point. We're still in the extremely early stages, I read one CDC statement saying they believe infection rates could ultimately reach 40% of the world's population. But again, that's just speculation on early data.

I've been monitoring mortality rates on my own through the GIS site by dividing the total deaths by total confirmed cases. Last month it hovered around 2.1%-2.2%. Today it's 3.4%.

I'm not. If anything I am saying it may end up being worse.

The infection rate is incredibly high, around 20% of those infected are carriers who never show symptoms and the early symptoms for many seem to be cold-like symptoms (thus they don't go to the doctor soon enough to not infect others, or it may not be until it's too late if their immune system is already compromised).

I'm saying that the potential is there and that's how it should be viewed.

I get that, but to understand the risk you have to try to put the risk in context. Is it more or less deadly than the flu? How many people are dying?

1/50 may not be 100% accurate, but it is based on the best data we have right now.

Can we also say that it may end up being nowhere near as bad as the flu?

Hospitals are already overcrowded.

Glad you think adding another wildcard will just be hunky dory.

A friend is a family doctor with over 25 years of experience and she's stocking up on masks (when she can find them), hand sanitizer and household products with a long shelf life. YMMV!

I think there are a lot of misguided people here saying flu is worse than corona virus. Yes thousands die from the flu but so many people get the flu that the death rate is low. Not many people die of Ebola because not many people get it. (Here in the US) so if someone says to you the flu kills thousands but Ebola only kills 10 a year (made up statistic) —take your pick which would you rather get sick with? Some people are saying pick Ebola because flu kills more people. Yet Ebola has a 90%death rate. I’d pick the flu. IF corona becomes widespread in the US I’d rather have the flu. Corona death rate is currently 20 times the death rate of the flu

I've stopped counting the number of friends and acquaintances who have had the flu shot and still got the flu in the past 6 weeks or so.
