I disagree with the idea of sports being in colleges in the first place unless purely from a recreational standpoint. For many schools they far too often plow money into the football team rather than the biology department, they shift the focus of students away from their books and towards an entertainment event. We are the only nation that does this.
Compare the academic ranking of a school like Alabama in 2007 to now. Nick Saban has done more for their admissions standards than the university's marketing team.

Applications increase when a school is successful athletically on a national level. More applications means more denials. Thus, to get the best applicants, admission standards are raised. Even if standards are not directly raised, it indirectly increases through the increased SAT scores and GPAs of incoming freshmen.

Who would have guessed that an Ivy League educated fellow named Binyamin Applebaum only sees whites as economic widgets to be used and discarded and has nothing but disdain for their cultural celebrations. I sure wouldn't!

Oh nobody.
Can’t believe they’re actually getting a modern dorm.

Rod went to the Louisiana School up at NW State.....liberal is not an apt description of the atmosphere there.
I knew Rod when he was on the Reveille staff back in the 1980's. He is/was a relatively serious dude

At that time it was only Juniors and Seniors so don’t overlook he was at some other high school before that.

Why is he an "elite?" He's just an economist, not an engineer or neurosurgeon.

My wish is, we had the leadership in place at the university and state level to follow a similar course. Sadly, I strongly doubt we do.

gnome has not responded to the answers given to questions about how Saban improved academics at bama.
That is a severely uneducated person. Disturbingly so.
I'll give another example for which there are actual studies: UF. Years ago, anyone could go. Then the football program, followed by the basketball program shot off through the roof. That exposure created significant additional out of state applications so much so that in state individuals are now limited and the acceptable gpa is around 4.0 to even be considered.

The thing about both places (Bama and Florida) is that they had the leadership in place to capitalize on the notoriety brought to them by their football teams. While the football success certainly brought the initial boost, it took actual university and state level leadership to followthrough into genuine substantive improvements to the schools.
Do we have that in place now?

One of my best friends son (and his wife) chose against Florida to go to LSU. They both returned to go to UF law and medical schools.
With that said, they would do it over again in a heartbeat. They loved LSU. Hoping LSU takes advantage and improves as you say.

Stop that! Culture and community aren't important, only economics! - Binyamin Appelbaum, probably.
I bet he took the day off for his Bar Mitzvah.

Ah, so you’re just making stuff up and assuming it’s fact.
Football powerhouse or not, choose any university in the country and you’ll see new buildings that didn’t exist 35 years ago. Schools have sources of income besides athletics.

This is short changing them for an entertainment event which is nothing but a distraction from what should be the core focus of a university, academic excellence and educating its students.
fricking STUPID and dead arse WRONG. In THIS Constitutional Republic of ours, it is PART of the University experience. If you want something different, renounce your citizenship, become a student at Cambridge and go to a fricking intramural Cricket match.

So pathetically clueless. The United States of America is a uniquely exceptional country, and college football is a part of that experience.
