Red State

This opinion piece states my sentiments on why the Jones’ verdict was wrong and sets a horrible precedent.

quote:

The plaintiffs claim they were injured because Jones urges listeners not to believe the interviews they gave. Hurt feelings do not equate to a reputational loss. Accusations made against you by fringe figures don’t hurt your reputation. If receiving death threats based on the public statements of the subject of a story opened that person to financial liability, many RedState writers would be independently wealthy and looking forward to a cushy and early retirement. The trial was nothing more than using the legal process to punish an unpopular person for saying stupid stuff. If that is a crime, we are all f***ed. Using the same facts in the Jones case, let’s take the case of Caroline Edwards, Aquilino Gonell, Harry Dunn, Daniel Hodges, Michael Fanone, or any other police officer involved in the January 6 demonstrations. Under the “Jones Standard, ” they are entitled to relief from reputational harm if anyone claims they were in no danger because they were. They would win if anyone claimed that saying the events of January 6 were not an “insurrection,” as they have publicly taken that position, and contrary claims harm their reputations. They would be entitled to monetary damages from anyone who expressed sympathy for the demonstrators and suggested that the cold-blooded murder of Ashlii Babbit and the apparent beating death of Rosanne Boyland were anything but justified again because of reputational damage. Any threats they received could be attributed to statements criticizing their public words and actions. Dr. Anthony Fauci could use the same standard to claim damages from anyone who claimed his response to COVID might require his appearance at a future tribunal followed by a lengthy prison term. Those members of Antifa who have had charges against them dismissed in Seattle, Portland, and other areas could use the standard applied to Jones to demand money for the damage to their reputations done by reporting and commentary on their arrests and the dismissal of their charges.

The Alex Jones Verdict

Yet another person/OP/editor that didn’t at least try and Google “default judgment” before posting.

This is the same simplistic mindset people who hate Trump use.
“Sure they abused the system to target him, but I don’t like him so it’s ok!”

To win a defamation case, you have to prove the person doing the defaming was wrong. It was pretty easy to prove Jones was wrong in his accusation that the Sandy Hook parents were really just CIA actors.

The media that wrongly accused Rittenhouse, and the prep school kid at the capital, of being racists etc.... you don't think those people should be sued for defamation?

Better yet, no one had to prove anything because Jones chose to not comply with discovery/related orders from the Court. The trial wasn’t “guilty”/“not guilty”. It was “how much does this idiot owe”?

Idk. It takes a special someone to do what he did. Wrong on all kinds of levels, and I’ve always liked him and listened to him, but he took things just way too far. I don’t know if he really meant to do all of this, and he just kind of got caught up in stuff, but he still did it, no excuses. Have to take responsibility for your actions.

If anything he said were true I might agree with you but he lied over and over again for profit. He made baseless claims just to rile people up to watch his show and buy the useless crap he peddles. Some of these parents have had to move over and over because of physical threats made by the idiots that watch his show. This is not about free speech. You are the one being simplistic.

Wow, so blinded by hatred that you can’t see the ramifications of this.

What ramifications do you think there are from a jury awarding damages in a case where liability was already determined via default judgment for failure to comply with discovery?

There is “precedent” being set, but I doubt it’s what you think it is.

You mean like CNN, MSNBC, CBS , ABC, the Washington Post and the New York Times did to Trump over the Russian Collusion?

Explain why you think this is relevant to Alex Jones’ case.

I’m saying if these parents were defamed and were put in physical harm over false allegations, so was Trump.

Rather typical PT board response. What discussion are you saying should be had?
