Texas governor’s decision: Whether to pardon George Floyd

quote:

Abbott has not said whether he will posthumously pardon Floyd this year for a 2004 drug arrest in Houston by a former officer whose police work is no longer trusted by prosecutors. Texas’ parole board — stacked with Abbott appointees — unanimously recommended a pardon for Floyd in October.

Since then, the two-term Republican governor, who is up for reelection in 2022, has given no indication of whether he will grant what would be only the second posthumous pardon in Texas history. Floyd, who was Black, spent much of his life in Houston before moving to Minnesota, where his death under the knee of a white police officer last year led to a U.S. reckoning on race and policing.

quote:

In February 2004, Floyd was arrested in Houston for selling $10 worth of crack in a police sting. He pleaded guilty to a drug charge and served 10 months in prison.

quote:

Abbott has several primary challengers from the far right, and his ongoing silence about a potential pardon for Floyd has raised questions by Mathis and others over whether political calculations are at play. His office has not responded to those charges.

George Floyd was an immoral repeat felon. The Democrats lionization of this POS is interesting to watch.

Why would they consider a pardon for this?

He pleaded guilty to a drug charge and served 10 months in prison.

Is there any evidence that Floyd's 2004 arrest and guilty plea was faulty, or are we just shoehorning new facts into an old situation for the feel goods?

He admitted guilt so what is there to pardon.

“$10 worth of crack” in 2004— with inflation it’s likely $50 worth today

What likely happened here is that Floyd had a court-appointed lawyer. They are notoriously overworked and spend more time cutting plea deals than defending clients.

The prosecutor probably offered a much lower charge (for the same reason, they too have large case loads) to get the case settled, under threat of stiffer punishment (such as repeat offender time). Floyd's attorney likely told Floyd "it's the best I can do unless you want to take this to court" and Floyd agreed.

But even a guilty plea can be pardoned. Especially when there's evidence of crooked cops. And the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles with a unanimous recommendation for a pardon, especially with all the members being "tough on crime" appointees, is telling.

Abbott should go ahead and pardon Floyd, then announce a full investigation of Houston PD at that time. He's likely not the only one who got hosed.

Surely Abbott is going to get primaried?

He’s so squishy.

Why is this even a thing?

Let it drop. Why re-open the wound? Why fight about it now? I could see if he wanted to do this at some point in 2020 to ease tensions or something. But NOW? So very stupid to even make this a debate.

He’s trying to manipulate Beto voters.

Abbott makes no sense. Finish the wall dipshit. And while you’re at it; stop letting Big Tech poach Austin and pretend they’re from Texas.

I don’t think “pardoning the innocent” is a thing.

I support him being pardoned for this specific crime. All prosecutions and subsequent sentencings should be removed for anyone who is a victim of shady cops.

Why are you assuming he's guilty, plea or not, when the detective in question is a PROVEN piece of shite?

Or do you not understand how a crooked cops testimony taints every single criminal case he touches?

I really wish our society would put enough pressure on the servants of the people to simply follow the Portuguese Model relating to the drug issues affecting all of us.

The Portuguese Model works and the servants of the people know it.

Pardon?

He pleaded guilty and served his time. Done.

Plus he's dead.

What a waste of time and bandwidth.

The only decision Abbott has to make is whether to even respond to such a question, as I don't think he is even entertaining the notion. And then he has a bigger decision, whether to reply "No" or "Ah, hell naw!"
