Telegraph: BYD launches attempt to crush Tesla in China

Damn...that is a big price decrease. They are really trying to take over their Domestic market. Elon has to be pissed. Could China be using this as leverage with Trump in the trade deal? Basically threatening to push Musk out of China which is the 2nd biggest market for Tesla
"BYD has slashed the price of its electric vehicles (EVs) in China as it steps up its war with Tesla.
The Chinese EV maker is now selling its entry-level car for 75pc less than the cheapest Tesla after cutting the price of the Seagull hatchback by 20pc to 55,800 yuan (£5,712). That is around a quarter of the cost of Tesla’s cheapest car, the Model 3, which sells for 231,900 yuan.
The Shenzhen-based EV manufacturer, whose investors include Warren Buffett, over the weekend announced discounts on 22 of its models in China until the end of June as it battles a slowdown in the local market and higher tariffs in the EU and US.
While BYD’s Seagull hatchback is smaller in size than Tesla’s Model 3, it demonstrates the strides that Chinese manufacturers have made in lowering the cost of EVs. China has become the world’s biggest market for battery-powered cars and domestic giants have invested heavily in producing affordable vehicles.
While the cuts won’t take effect beyond China, Tesla and other Western manufacturers have long struggled to compete on price with Chinese rivals and have seen their market share eaten away. BYD outsold Elon Musk’s Tesla in Europe last month for the first time ever and overtook Tesla in Britain in January. The symbolic shift has been helped by a driver boycott of Tesla over Mr Musk’s support for Donald Trump."

You've quoted yuan and I assume pounds.
What's this mean in real $money$?
How much of Tesla market share is China?
You posted all this, but what does it mean?
I applaud your non Xpost OP... but dude...

Chicoms own big industry in China and can manipulate markets there.
That's why doing business with China is risky.
That's why it is wise for US companies to decouple from China. And that is true no matter who is in the Whitehouse.

This is the actual article from the Telegraph. That is why I used " " around it. The article is basically saying BYD which is China’s biggest Electric Carmaker, dropped prices significantly 20-34% depending on the model. This hurts Tesla which was already losing market share to BYD in China. I am wondering if this tactic has anything to do with using it as Leverage with Trump in the trade deal. The price cuts are temporary till June but maybe China tells Trump they will make them permanent and force Tesla out of the Chinese market if Trump does not give in to some of their demands

China is asshoe.
Nothing new.
There are more markets than China. Elon knew what he was getting into being marketed in China. It'll be fine.

Smart business people know that China is going to put China First.
If the leadership of a country isn't putting its nation first, it is selling out its people.

That's what I'm thinking... which is why I'm wondering about the hand wringing with this- it IS kinda "duh", right?

Yes, but China is the biggest EV market in the World and Tesla’s 2nd Biggest Market. It would definitely have a significant impact if Tesla lost the Chinese EV market. Tesla achieved record sales in China in 2024 delivering 657,102 vehicles. That accounted for 36.7% of its global deliveries.

I have never once seen a BYD in America and I’ve looked. Seen them all over Europe. Seems to me the US isn’t friendly to the idea of BYD selling in the US

Good Point. That could be part of China's negotiating tactic with Trump. Let us have access to the U.S. Market or your buddy Elon is going to be leaving the Chinese market

Tesla will be fine.
I can't imagine that Musk nor associates didn't contemplate China's protectionist machinations.

Biden put a 100% tariff on chinese EVs...............made in china, knowing they were building a huge factory in Mexico which would not be tariffed. Trump said the tariff is regardless of where the cars are made and byd immediately stopped construction.
Europe also put in 35% tariffs on byd imports.
Their stock fell over 9% today after they announced these price discounts.

I am just wondering if China is trying to use the BYD big price decreases as leverage against Trump in the trade deal. I am sure President Trump doesn't want to see Tesla lose 36% of their global 2024 sales.

Yep
Could be very large part of the negotiations
BYD is a huge auto maker and is power player in the electric space.
Elon does not want them here. They cheat go get market share

China doesn't play by the rules. That is a risk of doing business in China. And it is likely the Europeans and half of Americans don't like Tesla anymore.

Not fair.. Our leadership (other than the Trump admin) and our progressives in general, all want to put China first.
