re: Tariff Time

So if Columbia were hit with 25% tariffs, would they pass it on to the consumer? Not if they wanted their coffee businesses to stay in the US. There is competition among coffee producers. If their #1 export to the US is tariffed, then Columbia could either pass it on to the consumer and raise prices, or they absorb the price and figure out ways to be more efficient, make cut backs, to still compete in the market.
you dumb frick, Colombia doesn't pay the tariff
the coffee roaster does.
So if your local coffee shop wants to sell a Colombian roast they have to pay the tariff to import those beans.
quote:
In the U.S., it’s the importer — the company or entity bringing the goods into the country — that pays the actual tariff to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, part of the Department of Homeland Security. This payment occurs when the goods enter the country, though the true financial impact extends beyond the initial payer.

Forced? Actually, I'll buy as I want
That’s cute. You’ll buy as you want and when you buy whatever it is that you want, it will be 30-35% more expensive after factoring in the import taxes or the inability of our business owners to export their product due to retaliatory tariffs which will drive American product prices yet higher.

I mean just a few years ago I heard we had to complete a pipeline for Canadian oil to flow down or the economy would pay a large price....
haha yep. the same people that were in favor of a pipeline to make it easier to get oil to the gulf are now celebrating tariffs that make it harder to buy canadian oil.

What's the funniest is that you're projecting onto others what you alone are guilty of being.
Trapped by a mindset that we're FORCED to blindly accept to what's given us.

Oil isn’t getting a tariff

Are you living off the fricking grid growing all your food and clothing in the wilderness somewhere? We all purchase from the global market, fricko.

Why is that better than choosing to buy American?

If true, I wonder why? I mean since tariffs don’t cost consumers anything, and that we don’t need anything from Canada?

It’s absolutely amazing there are people that don’t understand this is just a negotiation tactic. We’re not just slapping a tariff on Canada and gonna let it ride for four years.

prices will go up.
Even Trump admits this.
It's hilarious that so many of his cult members will not when even he does.

Sure we might.
It depends on how determined Canada is.
See, you're half right, but only half.
As I have posted before, this tariff game is a game of cigarette-lighter chicken where two guys hold the flame to their forearm and the first one who flinches loses, but as long as the game is happening both sides are taking damage. Again, Trump admits this; it's hilarious that so many here will not.
And this is the part that makes what you're saying only half smart. Let's say you are Canada and you realize that you might only have to endure this tariff until the next administration, and you know it's costing America just like it's costing you. You might decide to call the bluff and ride it out. Especially if several other countries join you in doing so.

They can raise the price of the Colombian coffee that they sell or absorb the cost. It is up to them.
Ultimately it comes down to the American consumer.
Pay a higher price for Colombian coffee, or switch to Brazilian coffee and save money.
If the American consumer, in sufficient numbers, switches to buying Brazilian coffee, then ultimately the Colombian economy will suffer for it.

Not exactly.
What if the current price of Colombian coffee is $0.75 per pound and the current price of Brazilian coffee is $0.95 per pound.
Who pays in that scenario?

If it’s BS, and “everyone knows” it’s BS, then it isn’t a negotiation tactic. Who will change their position based upon a known BS statement?
Oil, pharmaceuticals, timber, steel, and a million other things are about to get “Trumpflation” of between 10% and 25%. And every person living in America is going to have to pay.

Or the Brazilians bump up the price due to demand vs scarcity.

You know what raises prices? Off-shoring your economy for slave labor to nations who subsequently build enough power to steal your innovation, pressure you in the market, drive your small business sector into a corner of practically useless boutiquery and your employment into part-time service jobs.
We should have been more aggressive economically decades ago, but too many were watching their stock prices tick up and not giving a crap about the eventual consequences.
