Not much of a vantage point it seems. And no cover

I'd like that position to have some cover and concealment. Pretty lackadaisaical setup.

Yeah, that’s probably what scared off the Taliban… but it’s just going to make them go into the city looking for stragglers. I don’t think it’s necessarily a good thing they’re no longer near the airport.

I mean their location has already been posted on Twitter, so why bother at that point.

Actually meant to ask you about this earlier. Why was he not included in the negotiations for safe exit? They got 5000 of their prisoners back.

The original agreement was struck in 2019 and it included swapping 5000 Taliban for 1000 Afghani soldiers who were being held prisoners.

Frerichs wasn't captured until Jan 2020.

Defence Geek is a good follow on twitter, along with some of the sources he retweets. He has what seems to be a comprehensive list of the countries and planes involved in the airlift.

My Facebook feed is as quiet as its been in 2 years.

The echo chamber is second guessing their life decisions.

They could at least sandbag it, maybe get in a prone position. Make it a little harder for someone inclined to take a pop at them.

Cover from potential enemy fire is usually a desired thing in combat.

Unless that is "official", they did and announced that yesterday.

I'm sure they're well out of AK/PKM range to be doing that

Pretty interesting read for those with a few minutes. Former soldier who deployed to Afghanistan twice.

quote:

I remember how every year the US would have to decide how to deal with the opium fields. There were a few options. You could leave the fields alone, and then the Taliban would shake the farmers down and use the money to buy weapons. Or, you could carpet bomb the fields, and then the farmers would join the Taliban for reasons that, to me, seem obvious.

The third option, and the one we went for while I was there, was to give the farmers fertilizer as an incentive to grow wheat instead of opium poppy. The farmers then sold the fertilizer to the Taliban, who used it to make explosives for IEDs that could destroy a million dollar MRAP and maim everyone inside.

I remember we weren’t allowed to throw batteries away because people who worked on base would go through the trash and collect hundreds of dead batteries, wire them together so they had just enough juice for one charge, and use that charge to detonate an IED.

I remember the look on my roommate’s face after she got back from cutting the dead bodies of two soldiers out of an HMMWV that got blown up by an IED that I have always imagined was made with fertilizer from an opium farmer and detonated with a hundred thrown-out batteries.

I noticed a USAF WC135 on that list. It's the plane they use to sniff the air for traces of atmospheric nuclear tests. They seem to be throwing anything with wings and interior cargo space into it.
