Silliness.
Chamberlain said "silliness".

Incorrect. They actually refer to themselves officially as The Republic of China. It's why they still have the same flag.

Another meh comparison. The relationship between China and Australia is not the same as the Germans with the Sudetenland and Poland. Germany had territorial claims over both countries/regions since the establishment of the German nation in 1871, and large swaths of both places were carved out of Germany only two decades before.
China has never asserted any claim whatsoever to any Australian territory, and they have certainly never possessed it. Besides, China utterly lacks the capability to threaten the Australian mainland for a multitude of reasons.
Wake me up when Xi lays claim to Darwin and no one does anything about it.

Australia has the right to be concerned about their shipping routes from China, but they’re not going to be fricking invaded. China sees Australia as merely a nuisance. They’ve got their eyes on other prizes than them.

Ummmm, that’s the exact same claim China makes over Taiwan. Fly over there and ask a Chinese person about this. Whether they like the CCP or not, almost every Chinese person thinks Taiwan rightly belongs to them.

Anyone who doesn't openly say this disappears about 10 seconds later never to be heard from again.

Yea I made a typo. My post should have said China and Australia. Fixed now.
Also, they can believe this all they want:
quote:
almost every Chinese person thinks Taiwan rightly belongs to them.
But Taiwan never belonged to the PRC or the ROC until after the second world war.

They still think it though. And honestly if your aunt and uncle fled to Taiwan and your parents weren’t brave enough to flee and submitted, wouldn’t you be upset looking at your cousins across the stream growing up in freedom and prosperity while you lived through the Great Leap Forward. I honestly don’t fault the Chinese citizens for being envious and jealous of their relatives and descendants that fled.

You go one on one in a conversation with a Chinese citizen and they’re not a CCP cocksucker, they’ll often tell you the truth. Around their acquaintances and in public they won’t, but they’ll tell you what is up once you gain their trust. Even those people who would tell me CCP horror stories that could get them indicted or killed, they all thought Taiwan rightfully belongs to China. I think they’re very serious on this and aren’t being threatened to say that.

Me either, frankly. I think we all agree that it's only a matter of time before China makes a move. However, I am not yet convinced that they will even have to invade and occupy. I think it is more likely that the KMT or one of Taiwan's more pro Beijing parties ultimately comes to some sort of "One Country, Two Systems" arrangement to avoid the bloodshed.
After all, Taiwan has to know that it will ultimately lose a war with the PRC without an enormous amount of help from the West.... and I am not sure they would get it.

I wonder if it has some subconscious connection to the fact that the island was taken back from the Japanese? Viewed in that lens, many nationalist Chinese could see it as the last remaining domino that was "taken" from China during the century of humiliation. Coupled with the fact that the PRC doctrine portrays Taiwan as a puppet of capitalist imperialism, and I don't think its too much of a stretch.
In other words they see the reintegration of Taiwan as being the final hurdle to reintegrating China into a single polity "again". And i say "again" because what is now China has really never been a single unified state pre-WWII

I don’t think it’s such a stretch either and you may have a point there. China and Japan hate each other as much as Israel and Palestine do. They have slight soft spot for us, but none for Japan.

Japan's position on its WW2 atrocities has never helped make this any better, either. The national pride aspect of the internal politics of the east Asian nations--even when they are wrong/and or guilty of atrocity--is fascinating to me compared with the West. Just take Germany for example. They have fallen all over themselves to apologize and recognize their past crimes.

I’m not suggesting we do anything about it, but it is interesting that noone talks about it anymore.

what do you want to do?? You want to go to the UN and send in a UN force like we did in Korea?
Maybe you want to have a 14 year "police action" like we had in Viet Nam?
Tell us just what is it you want to do??
Jesus you are a small minded person I'm guessing. I'm saying we shouldn't let China take over Taiwan so I must mean militarily.
There are other ways.
China can't feed its own population. If the rest of the world isolated China, they would not be able to survive.
Personally I think the rest of the world should just say frick you to China. They should isolate them. Nothing is shipped to them and nothing is bought from them.
China deserves this for lying to the world about the virus. China deserves this because of what they did to Hong Kong.
They are a a spoiled child who is used to getting what they want if they just pout enough.
You can't expect individual companies to stand up to them. The world however could and should.
Leave them to their own devices and they will collapse.
