Pregnant women are smoking more pot these days, according to a new Kaiser Permanente study, and as California embraces recreational marijuana in 2018, experts are concerned the trend may continue.

“It’s definitely something we see,” said Dr. Amelia McLennan, an OB-GYN at UC Davis Medical Center. “It’s usually among younger patients, but really it’s across the board. Unlike tobacco and alcohol, people don’t feel like pot is at the same level in terms of risk.”

From 2009 to 2016, marijuana use among pregnant women increased from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent in Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California healthcare system. But the biggest jump according to the study was among those 24 and younger, especially teens. Nineteen percent of women 18 to 24, and 22 percent of teen moms screened positive for marijuana at eight weeks gestation.

We have sold this as a harmless herb. As a miracle drug. Now we will have to deal with the cost of Pot babies in healthcare and in education due to learning disabilities.

Prenatal marijuana exposure may also have a persistent negative effect throughout childhood on what researchers call higher-order thinking, which includes problem solving, memory, planning, attention, and controlling impulsivity. Some studies show lower academic scores in these children.

Pregnant women and girls are supposed to refrain from all of that stuff while pregnant.

Look, I get that folks like to get high.

But holding up legalization and the impending result of half the population being stoned all day long does not compute as some sort of high-minded (pun intended) panacea of productive byproducts...

But all those taxes we can collect...bro.

We can put that money into infrastructure and schools...bro.

I feel like dumbasses stupid enough to smoke weed habitually are the same people that would smoke cigarettes, drink liquor and eat raw fish while pregnant as well.

Can't fix stupid and they are just repeating the cycle with their stupid/learning-challenged offspring.

The study is rather laughable in this context. A similar conclusion could be applied to just about any drug taken during pregnancy. Anyone that does drugs not prescribed by their doctor during a pregnancy is begging for birth defects and/or other issues.

Pot legalization is just not one of those topics that ever fascinated me so I've read very few studies on it. But I do recall one from the 70s that was pretty fascinating.

They took two groups of college students at the same university and controlled for age, IQ and year in school. The groups were 'regular pot users' vs. 'never smoke pot'.

At the end of one year the GPAs of the non users were much higher than the users. The conclusion was 'lethargy'. They found that users put off studying for exams and procrastinating in researching papers resulting in shoddy work.

You understand that POT effects higher thinking ability.

Second, who are you going to tax to pay for the healthcare and educational costs?

What about the cost of jobs. Will there be an effect on these kids being able to work and hold a job?

Dumb subject title.

Ban swordfish!

Tylenol!

Wine!

Your commentary is as dumb as your subject.

Everything you put into your body has side effects. EVERYTHING.

You can't prescribe common sense. Legalize it and put the responsibility on people to use good judgement.

I know you meant that as a joke, but YES. it will.

They will lean on the Gov to support them. When others refuse, they will gravitate towards those who sympathize with their cause.

If this is an example of non-pot-head logic, then I need to start smoking, eating, snorting, injecting, vaping, and patching THC immediately.
