The discovery has broader implications for understanding how wildlife adapts to human-modified environments. “The fact that California ground squirrels are behaviorally flexible and can respond to changes in food availability might help them persist in environments rapidly changing due to the presence of humans,” Wild noted.
This is literally every scavenger rodent in the world. Pretty much all four legged wildlife, actually.
And of course there's the countries where the monkeys come through and terrorize the streets.
Whoever wrote this tripe knows absolutely jack shite about the world they live in.
Wait... Academic bubble. Ohhhhh yeahhhh... Of course.

showed this to my wife who keeps bitching about all the holes I've blown into the screen porch with my pellet gun. This is war and you gonna suffer some causalities
In some areas, it really does become a war.
Especially in cities. Especially in cities/states that don't allow the residents to use measures to permanently get rid of them.
Looking at you, New Jersey.

Revenge for Peanut.
Are you saying if they sacrifice their lives for Peanut's cause, they will receive martyrdom with a reward of half a dozen virgin squirrels?

I was fishing one time beneath a bridge on the Cimarron and there was a squirrel munching on a freshly hit possum that had been apparently struck by a vehicle and thrown over the side onto a sandbar. This Harrier Hawk flew down like lightning and smoked the little bastard. It was pretty bad arse.
Nature is the ultimate bitch of life. There is no easy day for anything in nature.

Squirrels have long been known to be opportunistic meat eaters in addition to their normally vegetarian diet.
Most if not all animals will eat meat if they are forced to or have certain nutritional deficiencies.

So will deer.

They do have an innate ability to get the angles of attack maximized extremely quickly. How quickly did you drop the walnuts?
For something with such a small brain, they have surprisingly AMAZING problem solving skills.
There's vids of people that have gone to extreme, and complex measures to keep them out of their bird feeders. And usually 9/10 of the time, the squirrels win.

That scene of the critter from Ice Age, where he's trying to decide between that acorn, and a girl, popped into my mind when I read that.

These west coast libtard loons need to get out more. You ask literally ANYONE who hunts in the south and they’ll tell ya they’ve seen squirrels munching on flesh from time-to-time. And even if these squirrels WERE strictly herbivores (as these idiots obviously believed), the fact that they admitted the vole population has exploded means more competition for the same primary food source… so, when that happens, the bigger, meaner animal always takes out the competition. Law of the jungle and all…
Don’t take a million dollars, 12 years, and a bunch a bleeding heart liberals to put 2 and 2 together there… this is just a money grab for them to be able to get paid to watch tree rats and do absolutely nothing of consequence with their lives.

No doubt at all. I spend most of my waking hours from March through October out in the fields and around the lakes, rivers and cricks. I've seen all manner of absolutely crazy shite from nature and the animal kingdom.
