Story that ended differently than Rob Reiner Story

I am sharing a story to show how bad things can get with drug addiction, similar story to Reiner but with different outcome.
Someone I once knew was addicted to drugs and had problems on/off through high school into adulthood. He was relatively estranged from his family by the end of it.
He showed up to his parents’ home one night with a machete, drugged out of his mind. His father had to get his handgun and ended up having to shoot him when he was attacked. The son died.
The father had never even shot the handgun prior, just took it with him when he traveled for work. The parents were good people and had other kids that turned out very well.
Such a bad situation and it isn’t always something the parents can control. I’m no Reiner fan and viewed almost everything differently than he did, but I don’t necessarily blame him for his son’s affliction and what fate befell he and his wife.

mental illness and drug addiction is no joke and needs more attention.

I’ve seen instances of drugged up kids attacking or threatening parents. Good parents, one was a doctor, but the drugs were more important. Two kids I know of who did these things wound up dying of overdoses while in their 20s. I drove the point home to my kids when they were old enough to understand that they would love drugs and the way they make them feel but they would kill their mom and me to get them. Thankfully they understood.

I agree with this. The apple never falls far from the tree, but often it does roll pretty far.

that’s just a horrible situation
The burden your friend must carry having killed his child and not really having an option.

Not drugs but my cousin stole a crap ton of money from his dad (my uncle) and pretty much bankrupted him. But, my uncle spoiled him rotten growing up. Never spanked him and gave him whatever he wanted.
He kinda created the monster. My uncle died from a stroke about 3 years after his son stole all his money. Probably the stress killed him.

Good lesson, hate the son was killed but better than the alternative.
I don't know if I blame him. Did he give his son his first blunt, alcoholic beverage or did he just afford the kid the lifestyle to 'explore himself'.
One day we will know the truth. But we already know this. Look at the children of most celebrities? Have you noticed they are more likely to end up, messed up? Drugs, Gender dysphoria, alcoholics...
The ones I'm most proud to watch - Those who get out of the business, go back to college, get their masters and use it, as a productive member of society.

I can't imagine having to shoot my own child.
Someone in my immediate family battled addiction to pain pills for 15+ years and eventually wound up in jail after stealing from everyone they knew. Fast forward to today, they have been sober for 11 years and doing great. Recovery can happen, but I know it is difficult for most.

We know the same family. It was a terrible situation.

Sad story, but both things can be true....
Some kids turn out to be fricked up all on their own.
While some kids turn out to be fricked up because they grew up in a fricked up situation at home.
For your one example we could give 10 examples of sad situations where the family life was not good growing up.
The fact remains....kids that grow up and have addiction or trauma issues as an adult have a higher % chance of growing up in a dysfunctional family than growing up in a balanced stable home.

I have some personal experience with this as well, and there really is no formula for who gets their life taken over by drugs. Anyone who blames Reiner for his kid's problems doesn't know shite. They're just taking cheap shots.

His father is a big wig in the political movement that said his son is a piece of shite just being born a white male.

His party gives alcohol to alcoholics and drugs to drug addicts in California.
I wouldn't doubt he was an enabler toward his son until it was too late. Many people wallowing in shite on the streets of California.

He'd sent the kid to numerous rehabs and was cutting him off from financial support. That second thing, in my experience, was the very likely cause for his son's actions.
It sure as shite wasn't fricking TDS, though.
