I am a Christian and I have a Bible and a couple thousand years of theological reference material.

Actually that is the truth for all. For the small minded and the well reasoned.

OK, then why did you make that first statement? I think that Trump and Hillary should have never been the nominees and I’m still disgusted that they were such. It’s a disgraceful moment in our nation’s history when they were our two candidates way more than when Trump was elected.
I agree with this. It is a sad state when such morally corrupt character is celebrated. Still I can celebrate the good things he has done such as the tax cuts.

We aren’t all “stupid hypocrites,” but we’re definitely flawed.
Well, read the forum sometime. Trump could overturn the 1st Amendment, and I’m certain morons like CptBengal and Wild Thang would defend him. “frick off cucks! We’re coming for you and throwing you in camps!” I’m sure they would say with no irony and then great pride once they see the results.
A very significant portion of this board I’m certain would have no problem being on the guard towers of Auschwitz if they were born under similar circumstances in Weimar Germany. There is nothing he can do for a significant portion of his fan base that would cross the line. Really nothing.

You are right, but it would be false to claim this board is representative evangelical Christianity.

I 100% agree with you there. It is an abomination that the evangelicals claims to stand up for it. I don’t blame anyone who voted for Trump in the general election given their options, but in the primaries, absolutely. So long as you didn’t vote for him (or really Hillary for that matter) in the primaries, we’re cool.

Anyway it is late. I am thankful for the contributions that Stephen Hawking made. I hope his family and friends will find peace in this tragic time.

I read the board several days a week.
I agree with some of the Trump supporters, and I disagree with others.
But I rarely take any of it to heart; and I certainly don’t let it affect my overall view of millions of people.
Many of these cats are just trying to get a reaction.
If you’d ever like to chat about Christ—regardless of what your opinions are—I’d be happy to listen.

What a simplistic, sophomoric, juvenile and spiteful view of reality you have.
If God is love and capable of unlimited love, why would he spite someone for simply not believing? If he truly loved his creation (his children) he would simply demonstrate the truths upon a person's death. That is love. That is nurturing. That is being a good parent. My GOD is a good parent. Your GOD sucks at parenting. GROW UP.

Well I’ll tell you what I think about Jesus Christ: I think he was a great man, and one of the best philosophers ever who after the Renaissance made the world a better place. I don’t blame Jesus for the Dark/Middle Ages since people focused far too much on the Old Testament at that time. But once they started focusing more on the New, then Europe and the world at large became a much better place.
Whether he’s the Son of God is what I have reservations on, but I do think he existed and was a great and kind person. I’d say I’m largely an agnostic Christian and I want to believe in him, but my thinking part says it’s too good to be true. I have issues with certain Christian sects, but I have great admiration for Jesus as a person.

Would you put it past imjustafatkid or CptBengal defend literally anything he did? Save for killing family members and loved ones, anything besides that? I personally wouldn’t.

What's actually sad is the fact that Hawking devoted his life to learning the intricacies of the Universe and attempting to teach them to people in easy to understand ways, and you remain fixated on a make believe red devil with a pitchfork who tortures sinners.

quote:both my grandparents on my moms side were apostolic christian missionaries. grandfather was also a minister. together they founded over 20 churches throughout Argentina and Mexico. my dads sister was a nun and the principal at a catholic school. i went to catholic school my entire life and was deeply, deeply religious until i was about 20.
I would suggest you study Christianity on its merits and not straw men.
i know christinaity better than almost everyone on this board, and it is stone age superstition.
its not real, its not a real thing. its mythology. its a story made up by people who didnt know what the sun is.
seriously, learn your world history. when you do you'll see the same basic stories show up over and over and over, hundreds and thousands of years before Jesus, or by people who had no possible way to ever hear about him. Joseph Campbells The Hero with a Thousand Faces is a great place to start.
do you have any idea how common divine birth stories are? basically everyone of note was the son of god. everyones birth was foretold.
Matthew 2:1-12 says the divine omen for Jesus birth was a star, and then in 2:13-18 says Herod tried to stop the prophesy by killing all newborns.
by amazing coincidence, Caesar Augustus, the Roman emperor when Jesus was born and who was very very definitely known to his followers, ALSO had a natural divine omen before his birth, and to stop the promised child, "the senate in consternation decreed that no male child born that year should be reared." he was said to be a descendant of Venus btw.
Alexander the Great, who died in 323 BC, had two different meteorological omens, and Plutarch wrote that he was the son of Zeus.
Mary got pregnant by god in the form of the holy spirit. Alexanders mom got pregnant by Zeus in the form of a divine serpent.
Hercules was the son of Zeus and Alcmene, a normal and non-divine human. she was also a virgin, just like Mary. Zeus took the form of Alcmene’s husband to trick her into bed. the result was a son with miraculous powers.
a thousand years before that, Mutemwiya gave birth to Amenhotep III, probably Egypts greatest king. she was a virgin too.
Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun, was born to Net (or Neith). another virgin.
Asclepius was the son of the god Apollo, his mother was Koronis, another mortal and non-divine human. Asclepius is the Greek god of medicine because he had miraculous healing powers. he was also a prophet.
all these stories are the same, because they're all made up. the gospels are nothing but a mashup of a dozen different stories that came before it, every miracle Jesus does had already been done by other gods a hundred times.
no thinking person can actually sit here and say all those other stories are obvious bullshite, but the story of Jesus, which is exactly the same, is somehow true. if theres even a shred of intellectual honesty in you, it simply isnt possible.

That's certain specific church talk...
Jesus and others said one need only cry out to Jesus/God to be saved from damnation. (shamed/without God)
I know that's not what preachers in Arkansas will say, but that's what Jesus said.
Up to this point in my life, I really don't have any reason to question his wisdom.
