Let me make up a person.

Okay let's make him up this way.

Male
Mid 40s
No discernable problems (tats, noticable liquor odor, etc)
Princeton Undergrad
North Carolina Grad
Previous Job running marketing for a three state region for a telecom company.

Now he shows up at Home Depo.

I bet he intimidates his (potentialP) boss, and bosses boss, and bosses bosses boss, and bosses, bosses bosses boss.

No chance you get hired, it's human ego frailty.

I can almost guarantee their algorithm kicked out your application before a human being ever saw it.

But they wouldn’t hire you anyway. The moment you say something about fixing inefficiencies, they would be done with the interview.

The store managers don’t want someone who thinks they know better than the guys at corporate and is always challenging the status quo.

They want someone to fall in line, shut up, and do the job.

You are right. A lot of people in middle management don't want someone who is better than them. Most of them are at the highest level they will ever achieve based on their own merit and don't want someone to show them up. It's just one of many reasons I hate corporate environments.

Same. I applied to several retailers for a part-time position late last spring and didn't hear from any of them. I always put $13/hr. minimum though. I take pride in my work and the $13/hr. invested in me is better than investing $10/hr. in 2 other employees most of the time.

A few months later Total Wine on Veterans called me back to see if I was still interested and I was hired on at $15/hr. for 12-20 hours a week. Did that for a few months until we moved and still feel that the $15 wasn't enough to make me deal with that bullshite.

I hate going to Home Depot. Every home depot I've ever been in has forklifts going up every other aisle with entire lanes blocked off. I spend the entire time dodging idiot employees racing back and forth with stock. Maybe stop stocking in the middle of the day and use your employees for customer service. Of course, that would require hiring someone who knows the difference between a hammer and a chainsaw, but we gotta start somewhere.

I had a guy come into the shop last week that works for BNSF.
He said they just had 10 new hires walk off the job after less than 2 weeks. He said, “these are 6-figure jobs no one wants.”

Add concrete delivery driver to that list. I tell people all the time. My customers from NZ, to Australia, to Miami, to Seattle and everywhere in between have the same problem: can’t find drivers. You can make $25/hr for 14 or more hours a day at just about any concrete company in America. Show some initiative and work ethic and you could easily be in management in a very short time.

Agreed. The ATS algorithms are a whole other conversation.

True story - I’ve got a BS and an MBA. Got laid off back at the beginning of Covid because we couldn’t travel to clients and they were all remote anyway. In the 6 months it took to find a new job paying the same, just to make some cash and get off the dole I applied to a few stores trying to get open/advertised gigs like “golf shop manager” at Dicks or Tool Dept Manager at Home Depot. I could not even get them to call me back. So now they can deal with the dregs of society and complete flakes for all I care. They earned this.

I’m an attorney with a construction background and had the same experience after losing my job. I tried to take retail sales jobs, construction estimating jobs, and even manual labor helper jobs and never got one call back. The only job that was willing to even interview me was to substitute teach.

We don’t have an employee crisis, but an HR crisis.

Eh, a lot of it is that someone who is vastly overqualified is obviously there temporarily. It takes money and time to train people and onboard them as an employee. There is more of a risk of an overqualified person leaving tomorrow.

There’s a reason overqualified is real. Outside of seasonal tourist work nobody wants to hire someone they know is going to move on in 3 weeks when they get a better offer. I wouldn’t hire a lawyer to sell TVs at Best Buy unless I was desperate, especially if the next applicant is a 20 year old working his way through school.

I’m not saying HR doesn’t suck because they frequently do, but there are legit reasons not to hire people in favor of someone less qualified.

The hiring manager knows you're qualified to take his or her job and don't want you even as an option for higher management.

Home Depot isn't like it used to be when I worked there. Everything has to go through Atlanta. This is why you haven't got a call back. People at the store no longer have control of anything.

How many of you people lost your jobs during Covid and later learned your employer got PPP money?
