At the Home Depot by my house. One lady is checking out customers. An angry Karen raised a fuss, to which the register employee stated Home Depot hired 30 people last month and not one is still employed.

What a mess. Thanks, Brandon.

Northshore, Im usually the guy in line to diffuse the situation by saying "What are you angry at her for, she is the one who showed up to work trying to do the work of the five who didnt".

A bunch of companies were offering sign on bonuses. Workers would come in, work the time to get the bonus, then quit.

They know exactly how much they need to earn each year to qualify for the Earned Income Credit.

True story - I’ve got a BS and an MBA. Got laid off back at the beginning of Covid because we couldn’t travel to clients and they were all remote anyway. In the 6 months it took to find a new job paying the same, just to make some cash and get off the dole I applied to a few stores trying to get open/advertised gigs like “golf shop manager” at Dicks or Tool Dept Manager at Home Depot.

I could not even get them to call me back. So now they can deal with the dregs of society and complete flakes for all I care. They earned this.

They should hire the people at the edge of the parking lot.

The nearby Kroger is in a good part of town, customers are typically nice (never heard a Karen in there, although I'm sure they get them).

They have two sets of U-Scans, one on each end of the register line at the front of the store. They were shutting one U-Scan section down, blocked off with shopping carts, and had two or three human cashiers. This was around 7pm.

They couldn't even run all of the U-Scans.

I don’t blame them. Why would they hire you as a manager? You’re obviously not going to be at the job long term and it’s not worth their time to train you. If you applied for just a regular associate position, they’d hire you in an instant even knowing you would be there a few weeks probably.

They aren’t going to waste time on overqualified individuals because they know you aren’t a long term solution…they have plenty of applications just like yours for “fill the gap employees” but they know you will want higher starting pay and jump as soon as you get a “real” job

There are a few places that will hire “overqualified” individuals, such as pizza delivery, but most don’t really want you. An overqualified college educated employee at McDonalds would probably be weird and counterproductive for everyone

And this is the type of stupid thinking that is now costing them. Yeah, I wouldn’t be there long term but who does stay long term in retail? They have 100% turnover. Pretty sure I’d be trained in 2 days and then for however long I’m there, for $15-20 an hour they’d be getting someone that bills F500 companies $300 an hour for advice. Maybe they get some benefit out of that? In fact I can pretty much guarantee that I would walk in there and find/fix enough inefficiencies to pay for myself 10 fold minimum.

No one is a long term solution at these places, as the OP clearly illustrates.

Yeah, you’re right. Someone who has controlled hundreds of millions in production and inventory expenses and managed teams of employees for 15 years is absolutely not qualified to stock golf clubs and run a department at Dicks.

if I was a hiring manager I would hire you. You would be an excellent role model and mentor for young employees.

Oh, see, they don't want people to come in and try to fix things in retail chain stores. They want mindless drones that don't ask questions about why they do something inefficiently, just follow corporate policy or the GM's whims, no matter how asinine.
