So you don't know what Born in the USA is about?
Most people mistake it for an ultra patriotic anthem.
quote:
Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." is often misinterpreted as a patriotic anthem, but its true meaning is a critique of the treatment of Vietnam War veterans and the disillusionment they faced upon returning home. The song's lyrics depict a veteran's struggles with unemployment, alienation, and a lack of support from the government, despite their service. The upbeat chorus, while seemingly patriotic, is juxtaposed with the dark verses, creating a complex and nuanced message.

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just coverin' up
Born in the U.S.A
I was born in the U.S.A
I was born in the U.S.A
Born in the U.S.A
Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man
Born in the U.S.A
I was born in the U.S.A
I was born in the U.S.A
I was born in the U.S.A
Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says, "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said, "Son, don't you understand"
I had a brother at Khe Sanh
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone
He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go
Born in the U.S.A
I was born in the U.S.A. now
Born in the U.S.A
I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A. now
Born in the U.S.A
Born in the U.S.A
Born in the U.S.A
I'm a cool rockin' Daddy in the U.S.A. now
This is a Vietnam War song, nothing to do with pride of being an American. How it got all mangled up with that, I have no idea.

As I get older, I’m less and less likely to hold dodging Vietnam against anybody.

Springsteen then confessed that he carried out “everything in the draft-dodgers textbook. So, perhaps, I felt guilty about that later on. I had friends who went. I had friends who went and died. I had friends later on who were seriously hurt.” The Boss went on to say how it was a difficult journey to “come to terms with myself”, and he turned to music to clear his conscience.
Dude made himself the victim in his own story while his friends went over and died.

that was pretty widely known, I can't stand his "politics," but in his defense almost every draft eligible kid, including Trump, was doing everything they could to not get drafted, hell Gregg Allman shot his two big toes off the night before his draft physical to avoid it
Yeah, Vietnam is certainly one of the wars where I didn't mind people not going. That was such a screwed up political bullshite war.
I want to learn more about Vietnam and our role in it. Anyone know of any good documentaries to watch? I think there's one on Netflix if I'm not mistaken.
Turning Point: The Vietnam War (5 episode documentary). May give that a try.
I can't stand Springteen btw... screw that douche.

I've always thought he and Billy Joel were vastly overrated and propped up because they were from New York

His music always sucked and I hated it.
He always looks and sounds like he’s trying to force out a six-day old, rock-hard shite when he’s singing.

We did not know then what we know today. The war was immoral. However at the time no one knew this. It was my experience that many of those who dodged the draft were not doing so on moral grounds. They were afraid.
People, like Mohamad Ali who stood tall and refused to go but did not run and hide have my respect. Then there were others.....
I knew 1 guy who married a women with 3 kids to get defered.

Yeah, he's been pretty much what he's doing now for at least 40 years, just maybe not quite as loudly.

Quite ironic when this president you speak of was also a draft dodger

springsteen’s music is horrible. Billy Joel had a few good songs.

Trump needs Congress on his side in order to achieve this distinction. He doesn't have Congress on his side, and the controlled opposition wing GOPe is doing everything within their power to make sure that they lose the majority in both houses in 2026. Trump's final two years will be defending himself again peach mints again. All according to plan. They'll also go hard at JD since he's the heir-apparent.
Prepare thy anus for President* Gavin Newscum. Yes, he's terrible and completely unqualified, but he will immediately catch the vote of every 18-80 prog in America, and every Range Rover driving suburban Karen from coast to coast. He's the "safe white boy" that the idiot Jasmine Felicia Crockett told us would be put forward.

Simply being enrolled in college gave you a deferment from the Vietnam war.

One of the most overrated "musicians" of all time.

Trump had five "deferments" .
Four while he was in college and when he graduated, he pulled out his ace with the "bone spur" thing. Alot of Ivy league guys like Trump manage to "legally" dodge the draft though.
I don't fault him for it. He was right to dodge it. They all were.

WRONG! Only those scared of dying did all they could to avoid going to Vietnam. There are many heroes who stood up for their country, whether begrudgingly or not. Some came home...unfortunately, some did not.
The bigger point here is that this ungrateful coward continues to bad mouth our government while in a foreign country. He should shut the frick up!

Avoiding a war on the other side of the world that was purely for BS reasons is about the only thing he has done that doesn't make me hate him.
