I'm listening to America's First News Radio and it's about the shortage of special ed teachers at schools. I knew that had been a problem but what I didn't know was this: "15% of all public school students are in special ed."
When I was in HS it was about 1%. What happened? They never explained the explosion. Anyone know?

ADHD is vastly over diagnosed.

Three things…

1. Autism
2. Social security (SPED = $$$)
3. Federal funding (Debt of Ed)

People are paid more money when their kids are disabled. They coach their kids and encourage them to do poorly so they get a bigger check.

In several states, being classified as "gifted" also counts as special ed.

Like the type of special ed students you are thinking of, gifted students also have their own counselors and are subject to an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). They are classified as special ed to ensure that schools have the staff, resources, and funding to accommodate those students.

You get more bennies if your kid’s retarded.

Twice the time to take tests for the students.

Plus, the kids can’t be suspended if they’re oppositional defiant.

What’s not to like?

I suspected money was involved but when did this happen? Special Ed kids just had separate classes back in the day. The parents didn't get any checks. They were happy their kids weren't in a separate building anymore.

Yeah, but this article was about teacher shortage. Gifted kids aren't in those classes. The GT kids have LOTS of teachers begging for those jobs.

Yup. And they have broadened the designation of this and autism. We no longer have "ADD", which is now all classified as "ADHD," nor do we have "Asperger's," which is now lumped into Autism. They have intentionally taken away lesser classifications, which I believe is to further push more and more kids/people into the SpecEd spectrum. Then you have all the medical professionals profiting off of the ADHD diagnoses which means numbers upon numbers of kids get slapped with this designation inaccurately. Pharma is making bank.

Vaccines.

Kids get 72 vaccines before entering kindergarten.

ETA: I'm being slightly sarcastic but open minded to the idea.

Not to derail the thread but one thing I noticed recently is that the vast majority of autistic/on the spectrum kids in our neighborhood are boys. There are definitely more than when I was a kid, way more, and all seem to be boys. Antidotal I realize but curious if anyone else is seeing that phenomenon?

Seems like every kid is “autistic” today as an excuse for shitty parenting.

I am a special education teacher. We have more students in special education now because of an increase in the number of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. Since the pandemic, we are seeing an increase in speech/language delays and mental health issues.

Probably has something to do with the 75 shots listed on the childhood vaccination schedule

This is going to be an outlier for counting SPED students.

In Missouri, a kid who is radically underperforming his IQ (22 pts or more) is considered special needs. Or, in other words, kids who aren’t being taught how to read.

Parents don't get checks for having students in special ed. If the school's total percentage of students in special ed (both gifted and disabled) is above a certain threshold, the school becomes eligible to receive supplemental federal funding for staffing and resources based on the total headcount of special ed students enrolled.

Most (but not all) of the states that count gifted as special ed have a rigorous testing process for each student to pass to be designated as gifted.

It’s quite alarming how low the proficiency is for reading at the 3rd grade level across the country.

Well, you have always had more boys at the lowest end of IQ. The reason IQs were equal at 100 is because the vast majority of genius IQs are boys. So it evens out.
Today, the IQs are not even. Boys are higher due to more aborting of fetuses with brain issues. Thus, allowing the genius advantage of boys to take effect in overall numbers.
