I consider myself to be above average when it comes to Civics...not an expert but very well informed. Here is my dilemma:

How the hell did I not realize that the Speaker of the House does not have to be a member of Congress?

If this is widely known then I am going to have to re-evaluate.

Why would the house let an outsider control them?

Yes, it’s true, but doubtful. We’ll see what happens in 2022

I don’t think it’s all that widely known.

Like Supreme Court Justices don’t have to be attorneys and the Pope doesn’t have to be a priest. These things are also true and little-known, mainly because it never happens.

Hence why people floated the idea of OMB for Speaker. Didn't mean he would actually run for a House seat

He would rek some peeps for sure.

You also don't have to be a judge to be on the Supreme Court. Or be a lawyer. Or be a HS graduate. Even people with IQs below 90 can be on the Supreme Court.
Just look at Sotomayor.

Apparently, the President does not have to be a fully functional adult.

Seems like an easy way to gain a vote.

the uniparty wont let this happen. They’ll wipe DC off the face of the earth before they allow a non hand picked stooge to wield that type of power

An unelected speaker would not have a vote.

Honest Question:

Are you saying that it is possible for the speaker to be speaker and yet not be considered a member of the House?

ETA: This is why I ask, taken from Google:

Moreover, when a bill is introduced, the speaker determines which committee will consider it. As a member of the House, the speaker is entitled to participate in debate and to vote.

It just like the D.C., Guam, Puerto Rice delegates. They can serve and vote on House committees, but can't make real floor votes.

Definitely not widely known. I don’t think it’s ever happened but will research.

The constitution says that the House “shall chuse their speaker.” It does not say that the Speaker must be a member of the HR, just selected by it. Along with other “officers.”

Trump as SOH would be the greatest. What are the Democrats and NeverTrumpers going to do? Sue? They don’t have standing.

In July the Democrats tried to pass a law that the SOH was required to be a member of the HR.

Hill Article

quote:

While all Speakers in U.S. history have been incumbent members of the House, any lawmaker can nominate whomever they wish during the roll call at the start of each session of Congress to elect the chamber's top-ranking leader.

In recent years, some lawmakers who didn't want to vote for their party's leader have opted to nominate outsiders.

In January 2019, for example, two Democrats voted for Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), another voted for now-President Biden, and yet another voted for voting rights activist and 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams
.

Bold text added to indicate Democrat underlying premise for everything: "It's ok when we do it."

Trump as Speaker (which incidentally, the only power directly mentioned for the SOH in the constitution is to start impeachment proceedings) would be the greatest thing to happen - basically ever. I would love to interview Tammy Duckworth, hater of George Washington, former nominee for SOH, while a senator, and loather of the former presidnent - on the topic.

ETA Governor Big Stacy of Georgia also makes an appearance on the list of people who will be having a meltdown when Drumpf is nominated by MTG and the gang

Known, but not well known. If you can name the minority leader of the House you're ahead of 95% of the citizens.
