The federal government this January ran a surplus while collecting record total tax revenues for that month of the year, according to the Monthly Treasury Statement released today.

January was the first month under the new tax law that President Donald Trump signed in December.

quote:

During January, the Treasury collected approximately $361,038,000,000 in total tax revenues and spent a total of approximately $311,802,000,000 to run a surplus of approximately $49,236,000,000.

Despite the monthly surplus of $49,236,000,000, the federal government is still running a deficit of approximately $175,718,000,000 for fiscal year 2018. That is because the government entered the month with a deficit of approximately $224,955,000,000

If you blithering idiots would shut up long enough to notice he's actually trying to fix some of our nation's problems.

They had a larger surplus of 51 billion in JANUARY of last year, with Obama in office for 2/3s of it.

Edit: January of 2017.

So it took Obama eight months to do what Trump did in one month? Is that your argument?

Love Trump. Hate progs.

But this is not uncommon since you have final tax year quarterly estimated taxes paid in January.

January always has the largest estimated tax payments due on January 15 of each year. My $9,500 created the surplus.

Love the desperate Trumpkin effort to get out ahead of the inevitable ballooning deficits we're about to see.

I'll be revisiting this thread as well as the spending & borrowing data rolls in.

Not really. The January 15 est payment is the final payment for the previous tax year.

Last time I checked, that's enough to build two walls.

Well you should, if you care about the credibility of OP's narrative.

If you don't, that reflects poorly on you. Your problem, not mine.

talking positively is one thing

misleading is quite another, whether intentional or not

we'll see what deficits look like after a little more time passes, and the result is predictable. as is the fact that Trump apologists will stay away from that.
