To normalize their behavior for future benefit. They are masters of the long game.

American surveillance balloons equipped with infrared and color video cameras, known as aerostats, were a constant presence in Afghanistan during the war. The helium balloons were first used in Iraq in 2004 and have also been used to monitor the United States’ southern border. Some Afghans said that the balloons were an intrusion into their private lives and a sign of American oppression, while others complained they did not do enough to fend off violent threats.

Let me know when the “spy balloon photos” are found

Trying to act like it’s the same as a fixed position ballon used at the border

Is there anyone alive that doesn’t think it’s purpose was ELINT collection and not photos?

Satellites are pretty good but that CCP spy balloon came over numerous points of interest on nearly clear bluebird days with little atmospheric interference......the CCP got a bird's eye view of US nuclear weapons installations and several military bases......the whole thing seems bizarre.

It was most likely to intercept phone and other radio transmissions. Why people think the primary purpose of the balloon would be photography is beyond me.

I didn’t say this was all about only balloons, did I, are you incapable of intelligent critical thought? I simply pointed out to people who think satellites are a one stop shop that they actually provide only a small amount of the real time surveillance collection. Surveillance from space is better suited for planning purposes, the rest of it taken at lower altitudes are more operational in nature

I specifically point out deployed positions in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, the article I mentioned happened to also included the southern border. So what is your beef, are these the tools of the early 1900s, a relic of the past, or something pretty technologically advance still in use today in actual war zones, not just the border

I’d be more concerned with 3D terrain mapping not possible from space

Out of curiosity, you seem to be mocking my understanding of the subject matter despite the fact it’s been part of my job going back over 20 years. Not saying it isn’t part of your job, not saying you are I’ll-informed on the subject, just curious what in your background makes you so sure my points are laughable?

I played golf yesterday with a fellow I play with all the time. He is a former Navy pilot. He said there is no doubt we identified it early an jammed all transmissions. He did say they were hard to detect because of the small signature.
