The only upside is that your son’s skills will be highly marketable after he leaves the military.
That fact that he won’t be laced with $60 to $80k in college debt is significant upside.
That’s exactly what he wants to do. Go military and get years of experience and his degrees. Retire after 20-25 years. He’d be in his early to mid 40s and would have decades to work in the civilian world and draw his pension.

You did your part Pop, sounds like you raised a fine young man!
Thank you. I really appreciate that

Completely different ball game.

He says this as a 17 year old. After a 3 year enlistment he can decide what ever he wants to do with some job skills and the GI bill.
You can put up with anything for 3 years when he gets out he can go to college, or get a job with veterans preference. Being a veteran, while not as powerful as being a minority, can get you into a job interview.

I retired 3 years ago and I’m so glad I did then.

I have a daughter serving right now. She wanted to follow the family tradition of serving and actually listened to the advice that me and her grandfather gave her about what to expect and how to navigate the social game. We speak a lot and the best answer I can give you in the military, the cream always rises to the top.

If I was in his position, I would join the French Foreign Legion. They’re real soldiers.

Wish you had taken that job. My son is transferring to Bragg and he has read many of your posts and thinks you’re OK, for an officer.

And I hope and pray one of yours doesn't get blown up in some third-world hellhole so the politicians that call your boy a white oppressor can make another million or so off his blood. Get your head out of your arse and realize the people that send soldiers to war are completely beholden to CRT and the social justice narrative.

I have two in and one enlisting in couple of weeks. One Air Force, one Army and the last is going Navy. All three are being honest about it. There are strange things going on but believe it will be corrected. They also believe the cause is greater than the temporary insanity, this country is still worth defending no matter what.
They’re also getting opportunities that they would be hard pressed to get anywhere else. Pretty good opportunities if they come out also, which is not looking real promising.

I don't agree with this at all. I am currently at the end of my career and its just not a place I would trust with my children right now. For example:
The Navy is essentially penalizing sailors if they aren't vaccinated by starting a random COVID test every two weeks of only the unvaccinated. Until command vaccinations reach 85 percent.
Agree your assessment. Son works as an engineer in naval air station and has been very proud young man. The current environment causes him quite upset and he might not be alone.

Congratulations. Where is your retirement home?

JRV speaks the truth. I’ve seen a million wannabe lifers become short timer shitbirds agter just 4 years. I’m assuming a similar phenomenon goes on in other branches as well.
