Aren’t sugar beets a viable alternative? They grow across a wider range of climates and are, I think, less labor intensive.

Looks like FL LA HI are the only real places its grown. As someone who knows nothing about Louisiana sugar, does it command a premium compared to the typical sugar?

Miss the fields on Maui and Kauai, that industry has really collapsed in Hawaii.

So if they switch to cane and it helps Hawaii get tons of great jobs and money back will that help turn them red? Very blue state and this would for sure help their cane industry

Are you being serious?

Hawaii has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. and of course highest cost of living.

And the most liberal state in the country is not going to flip red for all the amazing sugar cane chopping jobs headed their way.

Not a drop of Hawaiian sugarcane is going to go in a bottle of Coke, ever.

A few $50 bottles of rum maybe.

This is honestly one of the stupidest f*cking things I have ever read. Try thinking before you type.

Holy melt dude!!

Their industry is tourist based. All eggs in one basket. Growing more cane would be good for them.

quote:

“Pineapple is lost, sugar is lost, and we now have one sole industry, which is a very dangerous position to be in,” said Maui County Councilman Alika Atay. “We have put all our eggs into one basket, and that is tourism. But not everybody who lives on this island wants to work in the hotel industry, and it’s almost impossible to feed a family here working as a farmer. We are now seeing drastic displacement of young people leaving Maui because of a lack of economic opportunity.”

Your solution to Coca Cola's conundrum is to grow sugar in the most expensive possible place to produce it?

What's next. Is Bud LIght going to use barley form Martha's Vineyard?

We can grow it or buy it from Brazil They grow it in Brazil in enormous quanitites for ethanol.

No subsidies down there for sugar cane. They get 50% more ethanol per acre with sugar cane vs corn which is not efficient. Also much cheaper to grown sugar cane. Sugar cane in the U.S. won't need subsidies.

By your posts you are not worth engaging.

Short retort. But of course it’s high cost. However if Coke goes to cane there will be higher demand and potential to restart some cane farms. Also possible if Coke buys from other countries those countries might give up smaller deals with countries they sell to. Could possibly pick up those smaller but better paying contracts to help defray the higher cost in Hawaii.

My first post was mostly sarcastic but then you melted down over it like leftists with TDS. Chill dude, chill. It may not work but right now Hawaii should be trying to help their limited industries diversify. Imagine when visitors slow way down visiting their economy will tank faster than others.

Get some GMO sugar cane designed to produce more and make the health nuts heads explode.

I for one actually can’t stand the taste of Mexican coke products. I’d like a choice at least. I also like red m&m’s

There are a few places in Louisiana where you will see them growing side by side.

Ok.. I'm sure corn will grow anywhere sugar cane does. What about the reverse??? You know very well that telling a corn farmer: grow sugarcane instead! will result in quite the eye roll in 99.99% of cases.

You certainly have a good start on dumbass posts.

You come to a Louisiana forum and start talking shite of which you know nothing about concerning Louisiana.

Hey, I’ve been a Tyoe 1 diabetic all my life. So I don’t have a fight in this :)
But I do support our farmers!
