If you want to get the most bang for your buck in this economy go find an updated 3 bed 1 bath house in a good part of town
That's the problem. Affordable housing in "a good part of town" is effectively non-existant now.
A 3 bed 1 bath house is very likely to be in the hood.

This is patently false…
Maybe you have better numbers then. Until then I'll take his objective numbers over general whining.

Which numbers were you using? People can use different comparisons/calculations for affordability and y'all my be talking about 2different analytics.

quote:I'm 68, and I do. Latest Redfin estimate range is $885k to $955k. Big houses are nice, but my last kid is away at college and I'm working on the house constantly to keep up the landscaping, fence, plumbing, trees, lawn, and also remodel baths and kitchen just to sell it when the time is right. It's too big for me to take care of efficiently by myself. We're going to downsize on house, but upsize on workshop/garage and land, and move away from this suburban HOA, crazy neighbors life with fricking airplanes overhead all the time. I need some country peace and quiet, a place to raise a garden, and a place to turn my goldens loose to roam around.
Exactly … I’m 62 and still don’t own a $750k house (and have no desire to).

Don't forget it was SLIGHTLY worse back in the day.. aka the Carter presidency, the worst American economy post WWII.
Edit: TBF I'm sure back in the 70s there were old geezers saying the same thing "you have it lucky, you should've seen the Great Depression"

Could always live out of your vehicle and you wouldn't need to worry about affording a $750k home. Choices, choose wisely!!

Just found 2 in a decent area in my town with a quick trulia search.

When you go to zillow, realtor.com or any other real estate search, there is an option to reduce the price of the house you are looking for.
I get that houses cost more even when adjusted for inflation but people these days still don't grasp that houses from several decades ago much smaller and had much less in terms of electric, AC, plumbing, finishes and other "amenities".
The amount of space people demand these days would be considered on the high end luxury side. Maybe start off by lowering your standards to what someone maybe 30-40 years ago wanted in their new house.

They weren't my numbers, but I think he was using median income, median house price and interest rates. Things are horrible compared to just a few years ago, and I get people being pissed of that they missed it, but current payment ratios are just a little LESS than the early 90s if I'm remembering correctly. Close enough to call them basically the same if you want to, but it still means this isn't some unprecedented apocalypse that no generation has faced before.

Ah, total non-issue then

Where is it you choose to live and how much do you make?

A 750k house is a hell of a house in most areas

wtf?
Folgers, black, and a cheap coffee pot. A good coffee cup and a $15 Stanley thermos.
Buy a used vehicle with 50-70k on it.
Rent till interest rates go below 2-3% and buy a crappy house you can afford, fix up and turn a profit on in 10 years.
Nobody shits in the high cotton right out of the gate.

I remember the Carter years.
Posted on 3/17/25 at 10:35 am to goldennugget
Ah the good ol days when I paid 14% interest on a first time home buy. Of course, that was 1981 and Carter was fricking the economy. But, my ol boomer arse persevered and despite two layoffs, was able to scrape together a decent living/savings/investments and finally afforded a $1000 beater. Keep grinding.

Be cautious dude. Make sure your country estate is methhead free.

Still pissed at that lame brain for boycotting the 1980 Olympics. LeMond would have raked those frickin Russkies!
