I own a heavy equipment dealership. New units run $400-600K, and a SWAG of the steel content is 50,000 lb.

Two of our main product lines are both made in Wisconsin. One is much more vertically integrated and does a lot of their own fab work and machining (or farms that out to local shops). The other imports semi-finished weldments from China. It's unclear if semifinished components are included, but there is a good chance they will not.

The upshot of this is that the manufacturer that builds the stuff here will have a big hit to their material costs, and the one that imports work fabbed overseas may not. We placed orders for about a dozen machines this morning from the manufacturer that build more of the content here, and are being told that we should prepare for an $11K surcharge to those units.

It's not as fun when you see the knock on effects, not just for you, but for the people who build things.

But now we are actually employing Americans as opposed to Chinaman overseas. You should be grateful to our god emperor. You're lucky it's only $11,000 and not more. So ungrateful.

You said you ordered a dozen at a cost of 400,000-600,000. So we say you got 12 at 500,000 to average it out, that's a 6 million dollar order and 11,000 was added. Is that about right?

Why should they hit you with a surcharge when there has been no tariff added yet?

In @realism theory, it's known as an asymmetric payoff and considered even more desirable than bankrupting multiple casinos (businesses with a built-in edge) and underperforming the S&P over 30 years. With Cohn gone, it's all @real from here on. It's a grand experiment!

Maybe he meant 11k per machine? Still not all the significant. Like 2.2%

I may lose my coat but tariffs and minimum wages are cousins.

Both are a government subsidy financed by the consumer.

I can make an exception for using tariffs to keep industry home for national defense purposes, but I'm not seeing that here.

Why lie? Does it really promote productive conversations?

No.

I do not advocate higher taxes. In fact, I was for lower corp taxes than what was passed. I do advocate for going after rouge nations in trade and making sure that the USA is self reliant.

Tell them you're cancelling the order unless they stop with their BS.

Like buying a car and walking away because they won't throw in the $150 floor mats.
