Unfortunately, even though there was a vaccine there were large populations of people ignorant about the need to get one. But they had an excuse of a lack of ability for experts to relay information directly to people. Now we have people refusing to get a vaccine because of a failed politician and irrational fear.

The first smallpox vaccine in North America was given in 1798.
Unvaccinated people kept the disease alive for over 150 more years until the vaccine eradicated it in the US in 1949.

A. The diseases are hardly even comparable
B. The "failed politician" you're speaking of is largely responsible for pushing the vaccines through our disgusting public health bureaucracy, while being called a xenophobic mass murderer in the process

We have required vaccines for all manner of things for decades. It's absurd that people are freaking out about the Trump Vaccine.

This...plus...
(1) Smallpox outbreaks (like all other virus' known to man ) was always in pockets, infecting a small group of people in close geographical proximity like a small village / neighborhood of a city etc. COVID spreads globally very fast and is effectively distributed uniformly across the world.
(2) There was always a vaccine available, so you could isolate the infected and vaccinate the neighborhood. In case of COVID, isolation and vaccination can only slow it down a little and help public health officials manage the crisis better.

Putting on your adult hat, do you seriously believe 40% of America is avoiding a vaccine that could save their life because of a pin prick, or could it be that healthy, not obese and not elderly people have made the rational judgment that Covid is not a threat to them? - particularly those with natural immunity.
