I read an article sometime back about medical research and "reverse" studies.
For example, they did studies on people with remarkable memory to see what the difference was in people developing alzheimers.
They studied breast cancer of women and for this one they used first generation immigrants of Asian women from the 60s, cancer was nearly non exsistent.......but by the third generation of Americanization of their diet they were getting breast cancer at the same rate as other Americans.

Improving our school lunches doesn't require a homogeneous population
LOL
Get your head out of the sand, bro.
Homogeneous populations can accomplish lots of things that diverse ones can't, strictly by means of shared culture, identity and, yes, diets.
That alone does not make them better, but similar groups can more easily agree on changes because they are, drumroll, similar.

Do Japanese standards include these restrictions?
Look them up. They have kcal standards per student based on age.
Every school has a nutritionist/dietician and all food is cooked daily with fresh local produce.
You should really read up on it. There is a reason the country is so healthy and long lived.

The reason it works in Japan is because the nutritional standards are generally upheld at home as well.

At least my school district bans food delivery during the school day. Can you imagine how fat they would be, DoorDashing Canes multiple times a week?
I was impressed -- the young man's parents were not.

Has everything to do with the topic at hand. Also the ethnicity as well. They are a homogenous society with deeply held shared values. Food is not going to solve that in the United States. Our political leaders (Left and Right) want us divided.
Look who is funding No Kings. They are part of the problem. The problem of divisiveness.

Which completely crushes the idea that this is ethnicity related and not dietary related
Guess we should keep doing things exactly as we always have and never attempt to improve anything though

I came across a video and saw in Japan the kids prepare their own food and clean up. The goal is to teach how to run a household.
Was pretty cool.
Small school. But good video.

We should do that along with having the kids do general cleaning for their classrooms. I also think breakfast and lunch should be available to all kids paid for by our taxes. I know many parents use school as a babysitter but the kids should be fed at no extra cost

quote:And there it is. Starts at home. Here, kids are eating McDonald's Happy Meals and picking cereal based on the toy that's inside. Put something "healthy" in front of them at school, and they will turn their nose up at it. Mom and Dad are the blame here.
Japanese children are essentially “trained” to enjoy healthy foods.
Hell, even their deserts are “healthy”.
The Japanese do food correctly.

Growing up as a military brat and related situations, I went to many different schools. Only a couple weren't abuse of food.
If a school makes healthy school lunches, it will work if it tastes good.

Okay. Here’s the deal. People in Japan eat more healthy than we do. At home and in school. That’s just the way they are. If we started feeding kids healthy food at school, when they are used to eating garbage at home, they’re going to say it’s racist n’shyeeit.

Maybe for you. IMO the only thing we are exceptional at is killing people.
Baseball? Nope.
Music? Nope.
Food? Nope.
Arts? Nope.
Being fat and lazy? Well, yeah. Got me there.

Yes please do. It would be glorious.

Has precisely nothing to do with the topic at hand
Oh, but it does.
The thinking that what happens at school is more significant than what happens at home is simply incorrect.
School can reinforce values IF they are aligned with values at home.
If they are at odds with home culture, you are wasting your time and in this case, your money. School is not going to overcome home culture; if the home culture trends toward obesity and malnutrition, that's what's going to win. Almost every time.
And yes, I believe that Japan's single parenthood rate is one of the lowest in the developed world while ours is one of the highest. Not only that, single parent homes are almost entirely due to divorce (which means the father is still in the child's life even if he's not at home). Their rate of out of wedlock births is virtually nonexistent.
And if you don't know how much absent fathers contribute to a very unsuccessful home culture that is almost certainly incompatible with eating healthy meals, I can post those stats for you.

OP, this is a good thread and I agree with you. It may seem crazy to many but I can see RFK jr getting behind something like this.
