I believe that if competition creates a products that outlives the other product while performing 100% then it's a superior product and should be bought.
I dont think it is right to purposely make an inferior product for the sake of profit, that shite fake as frick.

The world's longest-lasting light bulb is the Centennial Light located at 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California.
It is maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. The fire department claims that the bulb is at least 117 years old (installed 1901) and has only been turned off a handful of times.
Americans all used to have one razor that lasted a lifetime and all you had to do was buy cheap razorblades.
Then Bic decided that razorblades don't make you money so they created and pushed for the idea of disposable razors where a blade lasts for two shaves and now you have to buy a pack of razors.
Fleecing of America is a long-tradition.
(albeit you can still buy those old razors and cheap overseas blades but Americans are so conditioned to the hiked up prices of the disposable plastic kind.)

Is there any proof this actually goes on?
Yes

How do we know it's not other apps or software doing it?
It was discovered and revealed by independent techs

Was Microsoft doing the same thing all those years with Windows?
Absolutely, I personally had updates cause Win XP to fail. I removed the update and it worked again, it re-updated and the PC crashed again. I removed it and disabled updates....the PC lasted several more years.
I still don't allow auto-updates.
When a company intentionally breaks your property to make you buy something new it should absolutely be illegal.

Really a stupid question!

What if they corrupted your car computer via satellite?

HW Bush actually sent out, as 1 of his last official Presidential Requests before leaving office, a Presidential Memo asking manufacturers to utilize planned obsolescence.
Very few people talked about it, very few paid attention to the very brief mention back then about it. My boss at the time was surprised I knew about it and understood the implications and impact to everyday citizens. We talked about it when when I gave him a ride to the dealership to pick up his wife's car from maintenance.
The real increase in personal wealth and standard of living came about for Middle Class America from NOT having to replace washer/dryer/refrigerator/freezer/tv/stereo etc. every few years. Those things cost a HUGE proportion of average wage earners income back in the day (kinda like Health Insurance now).
Before fiat currency and consumer debt out the wazoo, Americans did something very foreign and outdated now: they saved money. I know, I know. Hard to believe people actually retained a lot of their paychecks instead of constantly paying it out for the latest and greatest new fangled "now the dial goes 11" gadget and gizmo, simply because things were built to last a lifetime.
Nowadays if something breaks, replace it. Used to be, repair it.

quote:So you’d outlaw technical advancement? Sounds wonderful.
Meaning the policy of planning or designing a product with an artificially limited useful life, so it will become obsolete and thus shortening the replacement cycle. An example would be Apple pushing software updates to your iPhone to slow it down or make it less responsive faster than it naturally would.
You might also want to learn something (anything?) about MTBF calculations before posting anything this stupid again.

Keep in mind we do not live in a true free market where these forces could be naturally regulated by competion in many sectors of the economy.
quote:Outlawing technical advancement doesn’t protect anyone from anything.
I realize this board pretty much always takes the side of the business and eschews almost all forms of consumer or worker protections

US car companies did this in the 70’s and now we have a guy on Tigerdroppings asking where to buy a 10+ year old 4Runner...

Ive got a 4 year old iPhone that’s working just fine other than having to replace the battery. Ive got a Mac that’s probably 7 years old that’s runs great. I think you’re relying on half truths for your complaint.

Well, no, it should not be illegal
I 100% disagree. In the OP example, I have purchased a product. It is no longer Apple's.
They should not have the right to push an update that causes the phone or computer to stop functioning properly.
That would be like me putting sugar in your gas tank. I have no right.
quote:
At the current rate of technological advancement, the tech will be obsolete in a matter of time anyway.
This is not true either. Flip phones prove that. I have a computer I built that still runs and handles every piece of software I use. Its 10 years old and running windows 10 pro.

I agree with you on this topic. If I purchase a product, it is mine. Nobody has the right to shorten the life or degrade that product's natural life span

Keep in mind we do not live in a true free market where these forces could be naturally regulated by competion in many sectors of the economy.
If we lived in a true free market, this wouldn't ever be a concern.
But we live in a system that has government backed corporations. Consumers do not pick the winners and losers among the highest levels of the economy, which makes us corporatist at best (more akin to the Nazi economic system).
If the government wants to make rules regarding a government regulated, government supported entity like Apple or Microsoft, so be it. I guarantee you any laws made will help the largest corporations, while also crippling the smaller businesses in the same field. . .such is the trend in corporatist and socialist societies.

You actually think the Democrats are going to go after Apple or other big tech companies and derail their gravy train?

Nope! A true free market would give way to large monopolies that will do what they want.

History shows that they pretty much ALWAYS need government to establish them.
ATT, Standard Oil, etc. None of these monopolies could have existed without the government.
