Why? Do you not trust doctors? They still have to write a script.

You do bring up a good counterargument.

So my response would be no, I don't fully trust doctors. They are human too and susceptible to self-interest...as we all are. That's even more the case since 2020 where many doctors dove deeply into the great overreaction of 2020.

It's incorrect that pharmaceutical are completely evil. They have done a LOT of good for the health of the human race. But they aren't altruistic, at all. So I would be ok with a ban on advertising. However, I think doctors would have to disclose to patients all available medication pertinent to their condition to at least give the patient a freedom of choice instead of just blindly accepting what the doctor prescribes...which he/she may be doing largely because of the incentives provided by the pharmaceutical company.

That includes the politicians you want to make broad brush, sweeping laws that affect us all.

I'll take my chances with my own physician and my judgement about my own physician over some politician I've never met.

Would a politician banning drug companies from advertising on TV/radio have a negative effect on your medical judgement and conversation with your physician?

For a lot of people, their insurance company has more input on the medications they take than a TV commercial.

Pfizer spent about 3% of revenue on advertising. Would it be reasonable to say that banning advertising could potentially reduce prices by 2% without having any negative effects on the general public?

If so, you don't need Daddy govt to protect you from your own choices.

A primary function of our government as set forth by the founders is dispute resolution. I have faith in my ability to decide on things, but I may not have the ability to force recourse in cases of fraud, theft, or otherwise without an appeal to ”Daddy govt.”

A second primary function is to protect against foreign threats. For example, if I have a disagreement with an invading force as to who owns my property, I believe that after my means were exhausted, I would have to depend on “Daddy govt.”

Yes they should be banned. There isn't really a point to them.

Another question...
How common is it that a doctor will get kickbacks from pharma companies for selling their meds over others or none?
Is that illegal?

There are some really good reasons other countries don't allow pharmaceutical companies to advertise and we should not either. It only helps the pharma companies and hurts the consumer. It's not about trusting your doctor to make the correct decision. It's that patients see these commercials and automatically think this new (and almost always more expensive) drug is the best one for their condition. They show up at their doc's office asking for the new drug. A lot of the time, the drug may be slightly better, but not really much better or much different from that older drug that is now a generic. So the people get what they want (the new drug they saw on TV), the big pharma gets what they want (new drug still patented and more expensive) and our healthcare system continues to cost more and more.

All the docs I've spoken with about this hate these ads. It actually takes away from the doc doing what they want. Instead, they have to convince the patient that the new drug isn't better for them.

I think it’s perverse that they advertise the way they do
