As soon as solid state batteries hit the market in a few years (3?) electric cars are going to take over more and more market share each year.
Tax source will have to be found to replace lost gas tax revenue.

This is why some states and counties have been shifting more towards toll roads for new construction.

How about removing the gasoline tax and have the government use the current tax money RESPONSIBLY that they get from us off our income?
Posted on 11/24/19 at 6:53 am to Ramblin Wreck
No.
Perhaps the portion of other taxes that are given to other countries should go towards maintenance of our roads instead.

GPS trackers on cars to monitor your movements. Insurance companies like Allstate and Progressive are already trying to get people to sign up for that saying they will get a discount.

Sure, why wouldn't they? The are using the roads just like gas driven cars are. I don't have children going to public schools but I pay taxes so yours can. Same difference.

Don’t you idiots realize that once a mileage tax is imposed it will be expanded to every vehicle on the road. I personally don’t want that to happen and I’m damned sure not going to install some sort of tracking device in my car so I can be charged every time I move it out of my driveway.
Damn, people. Use your heads.

How about we just abolish the gas tax instead?
Why is the solution more govt?

Electric power is bought and sold. Sounds like the solution is already there.

They should. Don't know how you would enforce it though. Maybe a meter on charging stations or something, no idea if that is feasible though.
Just make it a part of registration or inspection stickers. Would be easy for any state who already has some form of yearly testing/inspection.

I'd guess most people would rather pay a tax when they fill their car up versus a $1k+ registration fee yearly.

That's the genius of this tax. It's the same as having income tax collected at the workplace.
If Americans had to send a check to the government bi-weekly to cover their income taxes it would resonate more than having it painlessly removed before their payroll check is issued.
Government loves built-in taxes.

Why would it have to be paid in one lump sum? The answer, of course, is it wouldn’t

Are you saying you want every state, provincial, city government etc to be able to track your vehicles location at any point in time?
frick that.

Seems a bit unfair to avoid paying their fair share.

I have a couple of solar panels and a windmill. Saves tons of money on electricity. If I had an electric car (would not work well on ranch), I would charge it in the garage 95% of the time. “Pay at pump” would not get any taxes from me or those like me.
Tying the tax to odometer reading at the annual inspection/registration would be the only workable solution, even if we set aside the atrocious notion of letting government track your day-to-day movements.

frick that. How about we make corporations and the thousands of truckers pay more in taxes? Are we really suggesting that granny Beth's Tesla, or cousin John's Tacoma, are doing considerable damage to our roads?
Make the people that are actually destroying our roads, all day every day, with tens of thousands of pounds, pay THEIR fair share, FINALLY.
Our roads would last considerably longer and be safer, not to mention our traffic would be considerably less, if not for trucks/trailers.
