Shortage of IV contrast for CT scanners

Today I found out that the hospital I work at only has a 2 week supply of IV contrast used to get the best quality images on important diagnostic and life saving CT scans. There are plans on trying to forgo ordering the scans or working around it. CT scans are definitely overused but now even if they are indicated they will be restricted. This is going to cost lives
This is because the contrast agent (80% for the whole world) is produced in Shanghai.

I get a CT scan every three months due to having renal cancer last year. I only have one kidney now, so no contrast for me.

Yes there is a critical shortage. This is expected to be a major issue for the foreseeable future. It’s not good.

I fight this battle everyday. It is just not IV contrast that is desperately short supply. We are at critical levels of certain blood draw tubes, N95 masks, laboratory test reagents, etc. In 30 years of the medical profession, I have never seen this before. We struggle daily trying to get and maintain enough surplus to get us thru.

Essential for performing heart caths, used for diagnosis, angioplasty, stent placement, etc.
