Californians voted against gay marriage, but lawyers got involved and politicians "fixed" everything.
It's definitely ruled by progressives, though.

There have been cases of towns suing their local city council for explicitly going against their constituency. Cases where people from towns of only a few thousand show up with petitions with 90% of the population's signatures, only to have the city council vote the other way. Usually the reason is dirty dealings, and sometimes it's just "We know better than you dumb regulars. Bend over and take it bitch."
And there are numerous cases of cities supporting federal lawsuits against California State regarding sanctuary status. Even the second generation illegals don't want it.

The People of California actually voted against gay marriage THREE times.
Three times the Judiciary ruled against it.
Not the politicians fault, not the people's fault. For once both the people and their reps were on one side of the issue, the judiciary as usual was on the other.

As I posted in one of the other threads on this exact topic, half of California is and has always been conservative. There's a reason many Californians want to divide Cali into 2 or 4 states.
