It is within the POTUS' power to do what he did to Brennan.
BUT, it is not wise to revoke security clearances from experienced people who expertise could be used in an emergency for which they could be called on to assist (as in the past).
What is obvious is that this move to revoke security clearances is purely about punitive politics. It is unfortunate that President Trump seems a petty and "small" man.

Look, I don't care that Trump did this and the excuse of "he may have been needed later" is ridicoulos from the left, the Trump Admin will obviously never ask Brennan for help
BUT Brennan was not legally getting classified material due to having a clearance. That is NOT how classified information works. Even though he still had a clearance he was not authorized to see classified material. Anyone who was giving it to him was breaking the law, and still will be.
