Guy who shot Garfield was actually a supporter who was screwed over for a government job. Garfield was a Republican. You also forgot Teddy Roosevelt who actually took a bullet in the chest in 1912.
I guess you could call this an assassination attempt, but that clown was never getting close to the President, the ball room was down 2 levels and about 100 feet down the hall on the sublevel .if he had gotten to the stairs, he would have been Swiss cheese. He never made it past the lobby level.

There have been two Presidential candidates who have been shot…..RFK in 1968 and George Wallace in 1972. As far as I know r these are the only two candidates to be shot during their campaign.
