The whole world has been shut down, so the true lethality of this virus will never be felt. The people who called it a hoax will in some cases double down on the remaining stats and manipulate the narrative. Some people will claim they were misunderstood and stand by their stance the Chinese flu was always a big deal but the federal govt was just trying to make people feel safe and calm. We all can thank Trump for closing the borders early. Keeping the Mexicans out clearly saved lives.

If true, we can multiply the number of confirmed cases by 4 to arrive at the real number of infected persons. That would reduce the mortality % to around .20% - .25% or so.

Would that mean it’s still more lethal than the flu?
Yes.
Even taking those numbers, they are still 2-3X higher than seasonal flu.

But CFR stats here may also be misleading.
CV19 deaths are a trailing indicator, occurring around two weeks into the course. Reporting of symptomatic cases tends to lead that stat by 7-10days. Especially during the initial steep upslope of a progressing epidemic, death lags case reporting.

Isn't this season's flu more around .06%?

How many died because the bat flu in this one particular facility? Few.
How many in the facilities in the region? Many many more.

Again. These facilities have never been full like they are now. The flu was not doing this.

I’m talking about icu. Not walk-in in sniffles.

IIRC 0.8%. But I haven't looked specifically in some time..

The knowns here are CV19-related hospitalizations and death.

Based on the NYC experience, CV19 is either more lethal than flu (it is), or its R-value, (community spread) is far higher than we realize or model d/t insidious cases.

Either way, the Italian experience of a medical system overwhelmed leading to a >10% CFR is harbinger of where this can go if we're not careful.

If you are in the group of people who thinks this is being overblown and it is no worse than the flu

One is not like the other....just bc I think it's overblown doesn't mean I think it's like the flu....it's definitely overblown but not like the flu.

If 3.5 million died I wouldn't bat an eye. That's 1% of our population.

Honestly if 10 million died I'd wake up fine the next morning.

Gotta think big picture.

Can you please repeat the question?

I was out removing the piles of bodies blocking my driveway (still with no help - Thanks, Mr. President!)...

If the China virus has significantly more deaths than this in the span of a typical flu season I will take it more seriously.

How about passing the flu in number of deaths

Not apples to apples.

We'd have more cases and more dead if we acted like this was just the flu and didn't respond like we did.

If you didn’t act like the flu was just the flu there would be less flu deaths as well. But we don’t shut down the economy for the flu do we?

Nope, but if we did then that comparison would work. We don't so it doesn't work.

If the media hyped up the common cold or flu as much as they’re hyping this, it would be identical.

There are probably a million uncounted cases. Meanwhile the fatalities are always count. The actual death rate is less than 1%. Hardly worth destroying the world economy.
