The 400 million was just the first plane load of cash. He ended up sending two more plane loads and over a billion in cash. 3 billion, I think it was.

quote:

The $1.7 billion in cash payments made by the Obama administration to Iran in January 2016 was not a direct payment "to not build nukes," but rather a settlement for a decades-old, failed arms deal from 1979.

Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation +1 The money was derived from two main sources: $400 Million (Principal): This was money the Shah of Iran deposited in a U.S. Foreign Military Sales trust fund in 1979 for military equipment that was never delivered after the Iranian Revolution. $1.3 Billion (Interest): This amount represented interest on that frozen principal, which was settled through the U.S.-Iran Claims Tribunal at The Hague to avoid a potentially larger, more costly penalty.

3 Key Facts About the Payment The Funding Source: The funds were paid out of the Treasury Department’s Judgment Fund, which is a permanent, indefinite appropriation designed to pay court judgments and settlements against the U.S. government.

The Method: The funds were delivered in foreign currency (Swiss francs, euros, and others) via unmarked cargo planes. The administration stated this was necessary because international sanctions at the time prevented the U.S. from using the traditional banking system to transfer dollars to Iran.

Timing Controversy: The first $400 million installment was delivered on January 17, 2016, the same day that four American citizens were released from Iranian custody, leading to intense debate over whether it constituted a "ransom" payment. The administration maintained that the settlement and the prisoner release were separate, but that they used the leverage of the settlement to ensure the Americans' release.

Unfrozen Assets: In addition to the $1.7 billion settlement, the lifting of sanctions as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) allowed Iran to access roughly $100 billion in frozen assets held in foreign banks, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. +6

Fair enough. We are not “after that” yet, though, so how are you concluding that there is no plan:

Dude everyones new favorite gay Lindsay Graham literally went on Meet the Press this weekend and said there is no plan for what happens for Iran next.

Oh, well, if Lindsey said it, then that’s all I need to hear. Lord knows that’s who Trump is going to make sure is kept up to speed on this stuff.

I lived through Iraq and Afghanistan, literally, the former for 12 months and the latter for 14 months. I agree with the overwhelming consensus those were bogus wars.

On the same token I also can see and believe there’s an overwhelming amount of not only moral justification , but geopolitical advantage to our actions in Iran and them having access to nuclear weapons is one of them but certainly not near the top of either category

Every time we intervene in the ME we try to use some moral justification “we’ll be treated a liberators!” We couldn’t let Iraq have nuclear weapons either. Tulsi was on record last year stating Iran wasn’t close to a nuclear weapon. Trump said we set their ability to get a nuke back “generations” less than a year ago. But yeah definitely believe every piece of propaganda now I guess.

I have a son and daughter-in-law that are active duty army. I don’t take it lightly.

I do question it, and I am waiting on more information before coming to a conclusion.

You’re not.

This is an administration with a backbone that is not afraid to do what is necessary to protect this country for generations to come.

There’s no plan dipshit. Even the Daily Israeli Wire workers are realizing this.

We are targeting a single country that is trying to develop a nuclear weapon to use against anyone who is not on board with their ideology; a country that murders thousands of its citizens for speaking out....but nice try.

Oh, well, now that we have the Daily Double of Lindsey and Ben Shapiro, Inc., unable to articulate the plans, that really seals it.

Lord knows the admin won’t make a move without running the plan by these guys.

AGAIN, you are drawing definitive conclusions using a few data points saying they don’t know what the plan is for one of the most consequential military actions in my 59 years on Earth.

I am highly dubious that that there is a plan, and even less that it will unfold as intended.

I’m just not so idiotic as to be screaming I know it absolutely because of what I heard from Lindsey fricking Graham and an arm of Ben Shapiro.

(And, FTR, I actually like Ben most of the time. When the topic is the Middle East, though, his objectivity is out the window.)
