No, and I never implied as much.

No such thing as a natural born right to protect yourself. It’s instinctual, but what you’re implying is a man made construct. The only reason you see a gun as the only way to defend yourself is because others have them. Again, it’s a micro scale version of mutually assured destruction.

Why do we have laws? Why don’t you live in a society based on anarchy?

No paranoid schizophrenics should not have access to firearms.

Happy now?

OK now that we have the dumb-frick easy part out of the way...where do you draw the line?

Since you've already ruled out people on any kind of anxiety or depression medicine, what about people who see a counselor? No medication, just sit down and talk once a week?

Ah. I see why you're struggling with this.

Of course people have the right to defend themselves. Why wouldn't they?

What would you recommend for a 100 lb woman to use to protect herself against a 6'3" 280 lb unarmed man?

This is a sophomoric false dichotomy. And your OP is a strawman.

I hear Somalia is nice this time of year, perhaps you should take a cruise and report back to us?

Depends on the reason they are there. Are the prone to insane bouts of rage and anger? Do they self-mutilate or want to hurt themselves? See, I don’t pretend the world is black and white.

So then you agree there are degrees of concern that need to be had. Where is your line? Because while you’re chest thumping and acting like I’m the one that has to define the line, you seem like you need to do the same for yourself.

Exactly. The best societies limit freedom because, given to their own devices, people in the aggregate can’t be trusted.

No, it’s not in the least. If it was, you wouldn’t have even bothered to step into this conversation.

But the laws still have to be written. This means there's a line, so what is it? How do you define it? You are the one dodging.

Who do you trust to define "mentally fit"?

Once we start down this path with arbitrary requirements getting placed on our rights, then we might start having a discussion about who is allowed to vote in this country.

Perhaps there should be a mental evaluation for being fit to vote? After all, voting affects millions and millions of people. Don't want any crazies screwing that up.

Do you trust the Trump administration to draw up and pass a set of voter requirements?

Who grants that right? You instinctually defend yourself when threatened. That is an evolutionary response. It’s not a right conferred upon you by nature, it’s just a basic response to threat. You do it for survival, not because someone tells you it’s right or okay.

And only mindless ideologues (on both sides of ANY issue) are too dumb to understand that the scenario which seems so “obviously the exception” to them differs only in degree from the situations that seem “obvious” to their opponents.

You clearly do not understand rights. Rights are not "granted".

This has happened LONG before the discussion on guns. You have arbitrary rules placed on you all the time - age to be able to vote, to drive, to join the army. Rules you have to abide by to stay out of prison. It’s all arbitrary based on the judgment of society. That doesn’t change because you’re talking about a gun.

Feel free to start a thread asking that question. However, it only proves the stretch you are trying to make. One person acting rogue with a gun can wreck the lives of a lot of people in one afternoon versus managing the coordinated voting patterns of all your crazy individuals over some protracted amount of time. There’s a huge difference, and I’m sorry you can make the differentiation.
