"The corporate kingdom has come to an end," DeSantis' communications director, Taryn Fenske, told Fox News. "Under the proposed legislation, Disney will no longer control its own government, will live under the same laws as everyone else, will be responsible for their outstanding debts, and will pay their fair share of taxes."

"Imposing a state-controlled board will also ensure that Orange County cannot use this issue as a pretext to raise taxes on Orange County residents," she added.

Is this a change from the bill signed a few months ago that actually dissolved Reddy Creek Improvement District altogether? Sounds like they are keeping the district now, but creating a State Board to replace the current BOS that oversees the district.

ETA: I just read up on it more. Sounds like if they dissolved the District completely, all of the debt incurred by the District would then be passed onto Orange & Osceola Counties. By keeping the District, the debt remains with them.

And just like that the left will tell us why trickle down economics is vital for the preservation of democracy.

Having a board equates to communism now?

I'd be interested in what tax breaks they are really getting here. They still pay property taxes to both of the counties they are bordered by. They operate their own utilities, fire dept, etc.

Imposing state control where it didn't exist is Conservatism? It sounds like folks are in favor of state power coming from their direction, which some argue is needed from the right.

Which negates the primary “gotcha” point people kept bringing up when this all started. That desantis was gonna saddle Orange County with all that debt.

It’s pretty complex and the details are still being sorted/negotiated. Tons of fake news surrounding this story from ill informed media members.

They may pay taxes to neighboring counties but they are in a special tax district that also taxes itself to provide the services you mention. So they have lots of autonomy in terms of spending. No doubt this move is about control, a political move to handcuff the mouse.

The media stories you read make it look like this will hurt surrounding counties. Disney wouldn’t be suing if that were the case. They read as of the elimination of the special tax district would eliminate the current revenue altogether. However it leaves the door open to renegotiation with the district in the future. So in my eyes, that’s all this is. A forced renegotiation

Yeah, we discussed this back when Desantis made his big play on the RCID.

Apparently, none of these geniuses thought about all that public debt until AFTER they pulled their little publicity stunt.

Disney was basically the ONLY taxpayer in the RCID, and they taxed themselves to pay for all the infrastructure that was needed in the District.

I am curious as to exactly WHAT taxes the grandstanders claim Disney was not paying.
