Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney failed to secure the Utah Republican Party's nomination for Senate on Saturday, triggering a June primary.

In the final round of voting at the party's convention, state Rep. Mike Kennedy (R) won 50.88 percent of the vote, with Romney following with 49.12 percent.

Saturday's defeat was a surprising turn for Romney, whose national profile far exceeds Kennedy's and who could count on a strong donor network and the endorsement of prominent Republicans, including Hatch and President Trump.

When he made his bid official, Romney was considered a virtual lock for the GOP nomination and was not expected to face a serious primary challenger.

So we head to a run off.

Great thread.

I’m wondering how Romney has collided with Russia.

..... or just a “not Romney” candidate?

I’d assume Kennedy would be a lock to win in November

Romney was one of the first D.C. Elites to attack Trump after Trump started gaining political traction for his 2016 campaign. If you recall Romney's presser, broadcast on national TV solely to destroy Trump's growing popularity. I knew at that moment he was a fraud and the same political hack we all witnessed when Obammy handed him his arse.

Romney gathered signatures in addition to going through the caucus/convention system, which is allowed under a compromise law passed a couple of years ago. That law has been the subject of a “civil war” within the Utah GOP. A faction of party hardliners have pushed a lawsuit against the state and passed a bylaw change threatening to kick out certain candidates who gather signatures.

Where Mitt the overwhelming favorite and rightly so.

I don't know about y'all but I'm not in favor of risking the senate majority just to get some kook candidates elected.

The Goddamn senate is what we cannot afford to lose with nominations going through that chamber. If dems retake it, say goodbye to conservative SCOTUS picks.

I’m confused as to how there is a run off. Kennedy got over 50% of the vote.

Completely off topic, are all these kennedy’s Related? If so, this may be the most influential/infiltrating family in American political history

That’s amazing!

Don’t think it would be worth the risk to Trump (might even backfire in a Utah) but how sweet would it be for him to endorse the other guy and have that kill Mitt’s chances

I was thinking the same thing. There sure are a lot of Kennedys left in politics.
