and it does actually take a lot of talent to compose and perform

That's a fact. But,
Mick Jagger = 80 years old.
Keith Richards = 79 years old.
Ronnie Wood = 76 years old.
They are my parent's age, and I'm 53. They should look rough.

They sample real songs to create a hook, and then yell over it. I've never been a fan of rap, but the "best rap songs" all use music created by someone else.
Off the top of my head The Roots and Kendrick Lamar both use real bands in the studio.
There’s also a difference between sampling like Puff Daddy used to do where it really is a repackaged hit from the prior decade and sampling like Kanye did where he’s pulling on much more obscure tropes to create something that sounds reminiscent of a previous era but also entirely new. The most obvious example would be the whichever early DJ heard the opening drum from “Long Red” by the band Mountain when they played at Woodstock and thought this should be what people rhyme over for the next five years

I agree with those 3 old ladies. Rap is not music.

I think Mick Jagger is a notoriously clean living health nut. There was a while where he was stopping into my parents Catholic Bible study pretty regularly with healthy cookies for the group. I think Keith Richard earned his look by like the age of 40. Jagger looked like a girly Barney Fife when he was 25 and then turned into Skeletor because of his genes

Even in their 80’s the Stones blow away the shite that passes for popular music today.

They actually dropped a new song and music video a couple weeks ago. It’s not bad.

More a symbol of a declining civilization.
Now we're seeing out of Madison Avenue commercials of whites imitating the histrionics and motions while obviously culturally appropriating, and being resented for it even more
The enthusiasm for such by those who didn't exactly have the West's best interests in mind is mentioned in John Coleman's book on Tavistock, which rips the infectious scab off the most intrusive, collusive propaganda mill in the world for the last 100-plus years.

To some extent, sure. But how many rappers have their beats, loops, samples, "hype men", etc. sitting there when they walk into a studio? And for most of it, there's zero finesse. It's just a lot of mumbling and yelling with a pile of overdone production. Most of the best known rap songs wouldn't have caused the slightest ripple without sampling hooks from musicians who know how to compose a song.
Whether it's pop or rap, there's a huge contingent that would just as soon have a cheap drum machine going in the background that they can clumsily two-step to. And like the bankers that run cinema, a product that is cheap, infinitely repeatable and doesn't demand expensive talent is always a win.

The only positive about rap is you don't have to be a good vocalist.
Posted on 9/25/23 at 6:38 pm to Auburn1968
What a bigot. There is no Rock and roll with out black people singing rhymes.

Country music needs some of that Bakersfield sound back.
I doubt it would work but it would be nice if Dwight Yoakam had a clone.

Okay, Zach, why don’t you give it a try and show us all how easy it is? Show us how completely talentless one can be to make a catchy beat and lyrics that hook the audience. It’s very easy to get a trademark and register with ASCAP. It’s not easy to make something remotely good.
Puff daddy can’t sing or dance and made money sampling songs other people wrote.

Probably no rock music without hill music.

If Rap was music, this would be in the Music Board.
Posted on 9/25/23 at 7:48 pm to JackieTreehorn
Angry is a damn good song.
But, Keith is right. Rap is bad "music".That being said, Ronnie Wood has been the main guitarist for at least the last 30 years for The Stones. He carries Keith today.

Buddy, Keith is just getting started. You will be in the ground and Keith will still be looking for someone to jam with.
